Compact Pa speakers

Hi guys, it's my first post!

I want to build 2 small PA speakers to go with my THAM12. I want something really compact because I don't do big gigs and they almost alway have a PA system on the site...I want something cheap but with a good sound quality. I will not use them very loud, but if the party is good, I want to be able to make a 150 persons gig easely. I want to build them!

So, realy compact, good sound quality, high sound level if needed and if possible, less then 200$CAN each
I hope you could help me!

Sorry for my bad english, i'm french :$

ohhh nice! but if I need to make a 200 persons gigs ouside it will be ok? my gigs are often outside. I love the idea of small 8" woofers but I don't think it's gonna be enough! I also want to use them for really small gig ( 50 persons) without subs so I want them to get a bit low!

thanks for your quick reply and if you think 8" are perfect for me ( now you know a bit more about the situation) just told me because they are really cheap 😛

thanks

A 1x8" may not be enough, may need a 2x8". You probably want a 10". Delta 10A with DH200 driver on HM2525 horn makes areally nice compact cab. Right at one cubic foot, ported. They work fine for background music without subs. Somewhere in the mess I call a shop I have the crossover design. It's tricky getting that one right because like most of those 10" "guitar" drivers there's a rise through the midrange to get rid of. But when you do, they have a really nice high fidelity sound. Worst case, I could pop the woofer out of one and take a peek. I've also got a crossover for a 2x Beta 8 / D210 design, that's actually the mid/hi section of a bi-amped 2x15" tower cab. (I know where that crossover schematic is and can find it easily later.) If you build that into a ported box, it will be bigger than the 1x10 but it would go lower.

how can I get the crossover design? I could probably build one easely!

I'm gonna look the HM2525 and I'll see this! the crossover is not a big problem yet

No I've built one last week, this weekend I'm gonna build another one and this summer 2 others(total of 4 tham12)

It's my first time with THAM12 so I didn't know if they gonna be enough for 200 person gig.... I hope! 🙂

I can dig the crossovers up later or over the weekend. Right now they are 22 miles away.

A "200 person gig" could be something like a backyard barbecue, a block party, or anything in bewteen. A couple of small PA cabs can handle one end of the spectrum but not the other.

You could back up a few threads and look at http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/pa-systems/272960-buckfifties-150-pair-diy-pa-towers.html
I'm not sure what you mean by compact, but a pair of 4' tall towers with a 1 square foot footprint each is what I consider compact PA speakers.

If that's big to you, then maybe your compact is my portable. I made a pair of these out of two Peavey Pro 12 PA woofers, two piezo tweeters and half a sheet of plywood. They were supposed to be stage monitors but were so loud that they got switched first to PA satellites then to portable PA use. They can handle 200+ watts RMS each but tested out at 98 dB with 1 watt at 1 meter. With piezos you don;t need a crossover. To give you an idea of the size, the cover over the woofer just barely hangs over the 12" speaker. And yes, the space next to the baffle is open. It's called detuned port. That's why they're so efficient. This design loses some low bass, but you've got that covered with a THAM 12. If you want plans, let me know and I'll draw some up. I paid right about USD$120 for the drivers.

Is there another design I can build for nice sounding DJ/PA work I have 2 Faital Pro 10PR300 waiting a new home and saw the video DIY Group 8"X1" I also have 2 Beta 8A but the designer says that B&C 8PS21 loaded is not really for DJ work to me sounds fine and plenty of clarity and headroom. I need a quick build trap shape but I need something that someone built tested and designed a specific passive crossover. This will be used for up to 100 people wedding or private party gigs. Anyone can point me to the right direction there's alot of experts here i know someone can help. I also have 12,15,and 18 mm Baltic Birch in my garage and various woodworker tools except a tablesaw. Thanks everyone!
