Vifa TC9FD18-08 best bang for the buck

If you did 8 make it a bipole with 4 in front and 4 in back. This would eliminate baffle step loss and give you an added +6dB in bass boost compared to all 8 in front.

Somewhat similar to a bipole, I used six TC9FDs in a ring on each of my Cheap Half-Assed Omnidirectional Speakers. I'm very happy with them, though they don't get quite loud enough for me. They've convinced me that omni is worth serious experimentation; I'm planning a new pair, different design. It never ends...

Very nice! How were you able to rear mount those drivers? Squeeze through the top access panel with a flexible shaft bolt driver? How did those Linaem tweeters work out?

Tell is more about the design - ported or MLTL or sealed? xO freq?

Mounting the drivers was a royal PITA. There's just enough room to get a hand down in there with a stubby screwdriver. It worked, but I wouldn't do it this way again. You really need removable baffles.

I've always liked the way the Linaeum tweeters sound, which is why I kept them all this time, waiting for something to do with them. I'm sure they don't measure well; and they're dipoles, so the sound from the rear of the speakers has some phase cancellation. I still like them.

The boxes are sealed. Crossover (active) is currently at 4kHz, which gets it out of the voice band, IMO a key to vocal clarity. I'll post a thread about them with build pics etc. when I get a chance.

I see nothing halfassed about those. Cut in a sub or two and they will go much louder.
Why not put the x-over point much higher or not use the tweeter at all?
The Vifas have very good highs, esp. in an array where they are taxed a fraction. of what they would be in a one or two way setup.

I am running a sub, still playing with crossover points. I haven't tried running them without the tweeters; I have a soft spot for these tweeters but I'll give it a try. The half-assedness is mostly about not doing any simulations or even measurements. I just wanted to quickly knock together something that would let me experience omni sound. Fun stuff...

The simulations and measurements would surely have taken less time than the advanced way in which you mounted the drivers and the time you used to finish off the cab in such a nice way? ;-P

That's neat. What does the impedance work out to with three drivers wired this way? I'm guessing 12 ohms, but I'm electronically impaired.

I think it is (8R-parallel-8R)-series-8ohms gives 12ohms. Note that bridge tied load (BTL) class D amps like 3116 cannot be used this way. Need a dumb class AB like a $5 TDA7297. Or if you want to have more oomph a 3886.
