Vifa TC9FD18-08 best bang for the buck

here's the input Z of one in a foam core Karlsonator

Thanks for the measurement Freddi. The alignment with the K aperture is certainly not a bass reflex or even plain MLTL anymore. Some horn action going on there. 🙂

wel, i experimented a bit with fullrange drivers that i had access to (Fostex and tangbands) and think that 6.5 till 8 inch is often the best. Recently i build a fullrange box with a Alpair 10.3M (see picture) and those deliver rather good bass. I need to do measuring yet (i did, but not on a good scientific basis so i won't publish numbers) but i hear deep clear bass from that ported box i've build. It's more the highs that get a bit stressed sometimes with those. But it's certainly ******** you can't get decent bass out of a fullrange driver.

Wesayso,
Wow! That is very impressive. I assume this is typical listening levels SPL at listening position? -35dB THD at 30Hz distortion is fantastic. It must sound superbly clean and dynamic. Can you show the impulse response of the above? I would imagine it is an ideal impulse response. Probably a lot of this is made possible with the convolution engine running full time?

There is nothing special about it..

Visaton B80 and ScanSpeak 10F/8424 are the best so far..

Well I was referring to as compared to the TC9FD, which is the topic of this thread. The TC9FD is a plastic frame/bezel driver and as good as it sounds, looks kind of cheap with a foam gasket glued onto the front (probably for OEM rear mount TV's).

Sure, you can compare to the Visaton or Scanspeak, what are the price points on those? Certainly not $30. And what is xmax on the Visaton or Scanspeak? Not 4mm. So I still think it is special.

Same conditions as before, both speakers running, at listening position in an almost non treated "live" living room.
And yes, this is with convolution running.

It really sounds dynamic... if you turn the volume up it just gets louder. Not less clear sounding...
Like I said before, only if you start a conversation you notice how loud it is playing. I keep a RadioShack meter close to prevent damaging my ears.
When things in the room start to vibrate is usually a good sign of too loud.

Dangggg that's good!!!! 😀

I wish I could hear it in person - I can understand being brought to tears now.

You have proven that the TC9FD x 50 is certainly a driver capable of world-class performance. I doubt that there are any single drivers costing $500 (the price of 50 TC9FD's) that can do this.

What is the point of increasing xmas when all these drivers are useless below 500 Hz because of distorsion.. they should be used only where doing well..

Dayton RS100 have a lot worse CSD comparing to Visaton and ScanSpeak, so the price is lower..

Differences in prices of all these drivers are logical and correct.. in this case I would not suggested any compromise, differences are clearly audible.. the best drivers are the most expensive, but will make a clear difference from average to superior speaker..

I can get you a MLTL design for an 8 driver bipole. It will be pretty big as these drivers need volume to get low bass. Typical extension with MLTL is 55Hz. 8 drivers series parallel is +6dB sensitivity at same 8ohm load. Should be 91dB sensitive with no baffle step loss. You need to be more than 6 ft away to listen to avoid comb interference. Should sound great though.
