i want to get a direct out signal from my desk to a zoom r16 . looking at the circuit diagram the insert socket is post EQ and post mic gain. has anyone tried using the line in instead. this is pre EQ, and pre mic gain with a pad for attenuation. i am making up some leads using TRS plugs with tip and ring shorted together and a mono jack to go into the zoom. from what i have read the insert socket is usually between the mic gain and the EQ controls. has anyone tried this trick witha mg16/4? or if not could they and report the results.?
looking at the circuit diagram again i can see your point when using the line input. it would short out the signal. i will have to use the insert jack which only has one signal path going to both the tip and the ring. the ground or sleeve forms the other side of the signal path as described in the article. so it looks like i will have to record after the mic level and EQ circuit then. thanks for pointing this out.
are you recording the whole mix or an individual channel?
why is pre EQ and pre fade a concern?
not on an insert.

Tip is +ve signal and ring is -ve signal so to short them out is wrong.
not on an insert.

not a real problem, just means i will have to record the mix with the EQ set for the venue. rather than having it all flat and at equal levels going to the zoom. plus i will have the noise of the mixer first stage as well,if there is any.
i could use the zoom first and use the output of the zoom to 2 channels of the desk. its only a small venue so probably wont matter too much. getting a good clean sound to the recorder is the most important. you can always add but not take away.
we can plug everything into the zoom at rehearsal and set the levels before we go to the gig. the PA is at the venue and not easy to get access to except for a sound check just before the gig. we have 4 mics one guitar pick one one flute mic one banjo and a double bass all di'ed so once set should stay about the same. i assume the output from the zoom is at line level?
presetting a mix is easy. the hard part is getting the musicians to do the same(especially when alcohol is available)

luckily apart from the double bass there are no amps on stage. everything is going straight to the desk.

Correct. I was answering the question regarding TRS jacks with no mention of inserts. You can make up a TRS jack, connecting Tip to Ring and taking an output from it but it will be unbalanced.
sorry Jon but from the get go the OP did say he was thinking of using an insert to achieve his ends.
i hope pointing out the error didn't offend you.we (especially me) are all prone to making mistakes.
Mr Golding doesn't have a clear understanding of signal flow otherwise his thinking of using a balanced line "in" jack to achieve an "output" would have been a exercise in futility me thinks
