Hi there guys! I have been planing to build Pass amp for a long time and finally got allmost all the parts I need to build one. Heatsinks (30 lbs to be exact), PSU caps (8 x 150.000uF/35V), all transistors (20 pcs IRFP240, 10 pcs IRF9610, etc) and all other small parts (resistors, capacitors, zeners, etc) and the last thing - 1000VA, C-core, 20 lbs transformer. But... It is rated at 2 X 14V AC only. I assume that after rectification and caps I can get something between 17 and 18V DC max. Any advice or idea which Pass clone to build to get most out of parts I have is more than welcome!
Maybe and Aleph Mini on the +-17V.
With a 1000VA transformer you may be able to build a voltage multiplier since you have plenty of current capability........

Aleph M is obvious choice but in that case all other components I have will be overkill for that particular amp...
Aleph-X sounds like a good idea but isn't +/-17-18V DC a bit low? Has anybody around here built it that way?

Actually, Grey's original design ran on +/- 15V rails.
Cheers,
Dennis
I would try the Aleph-X but not with the IRFP240s. You need an older FET (044, 140, 150). Even though mine never satisfied me, others have had success with it. Remember, this design is over 10 years old so with the latest cap multipliers, differential chokes and better testing/matching equipment more accessible, this could the best Pass project. With that trafo you could run 0.1R source resistors on a classic (2 pair) Aleph-X and drive Wilson Watt Puppies or even a dead short if you wanted to 🙂

IRFP150N is good enough for me , one instead of two IRFP240
made that in Babelfish J
as always , best 12AX7 is noiseless one , not most expensive or rarest one
in fact , best 12AX7 is good 7DJ8

Thank you all for narrowing my focus on AX and F5T. Since I also have some IRFP9140, couple ST BYT230PIV-400 double diodes and 4 more 52.000uF/30V caps for voltage doubler I'll probably get some MUR3020's, PCB set and go for F5Tv2. I' might even try F5X EUVL approach someday when I finish my milk and grow up. 😀 Still, Aleph-X is just another set of PCB's away. 😉
Can you really build a voltage doubler suitable to supply one of these amps? Sounds like a challenge. 😀 I'd like to see what you have in mind for that.
No one mentioned any of the babelfish variations here. What do they improve on the classic Aleph-X?
Really? No "X" babelfish? If this is so then what was introduced in the babelfish over the Aleph-J?
I made J , tried it in X configuration and wasn't puzzled enough to proceed , simply because I didn't need it
then I made
, even not being aware of fact that is Babelfish X.02
later I made Babelfish J2 , but that one remained sort of hidden , respecting Papa's IP (original wasn't intended for revealing)
few more Babelfishes on shelves , but they're having same destiny as B J2
