The Ovation sx sounds lovely as well. I just built one a couple of weeks ago. Only issue is that it is class A so it needs a pretty big heatsink. I'm not sure it sounds any better than the Ovation nx for which you can buy factory made boards from Jim's Audio.

I didn't keep track of the cost since I had most of the parts on hand. If you buy the boards from Jim's audio they come with the PSU/protection board so all you need is the transformer, heatsinks, case and hardware. If you need everything I would guess around $120 for the BOM. I bought this transformer. Works perfectly. Be sure to note the updated info in the build notes.

R20 becomes 1k. This centers the output stage bias adjustment (sx-Amp)

That price was an estimate. I just looked at my Mouser order for that amp and it was close to $100 and I had the drivers and outputs and most of the 1/4w through hole resistors so it may run a little higher but should be close. Just make sure your get the latest BOM. Some of the surface mount transistors were changed in the PSU. I believe that Bonsai has the latest information in the documents on his website.
This is a very good sounding amp.
Be sure to read through the thread as well. We worked through most of the issues. It would be better for you to learn from my problems rather than have to discover them yourself. 😉

This is another choice worthy of serious consideration. It's relatively simple and relatively low cost. It has been built by very many people and there's a lot of information available and if you search for more information you'll find there's a lot of enthusiasm for it.

Just to confirm, the nx-Amp documentation is up to date for the amplifer boards and for the PSU board. My thanks to all who participated in helping to improve this design.
The PCB's from jim's audio show the old values for the 4 diamond buffer resistors - the first few pages of the nx-Amp write up tells which ones to change and the values.
I have built 2 sets of boards from Jim's audio - they are good boards (about to build another for my son . . . . )
I will publish an update to the sx-Amp which will include the single sided PCB layout in the next few days. The only change in the doc is that R20 goes fropm 220 Ohms to 1k Ohms as mentioned above.

This is a big complicated design. I would not recommend it.
I think for power, a good step up from the sx amp is the nx-Amp.
The e-Amp is very good, but I would have to do a lot of work on the documentation. I am too busy right now!

I have been asking myself the same question for a while... what amp. I have been looking at one of the ClassD Audio amps for $200 at 125W per channel and it comes with a Trafo + PSU board.
Bonsai, your amps look pretty awesome, I wouldn't mind assembling a proven design for my first DIY amp. How much would it cost (ballpark) to build the nx or the e-amp in electronics parts?
edit: I read the first 2 pages but someone Ballparked the BOM list at $100-120 for the sx Class A amp?

I Have Scanned, and did a little reading, of the NX document. It's very well put together..
Any basic chassis available for purchase complete with heat sinks?
I shy away from of Class D based on some listening years ago.. All of them completely missing Higher frequency detail.. Some agree, some don't.

If this is for the nx-Amp, then either will do, although I would recommend the 500 VA (that's what I am using).
Hello Thimios, no I have not done this. I prefer standard power supply for audio. If you do use SMPS for audio, I would always recommend you add a ripple eater on the output, and also be careful for HF noise.
