So... What amp should i build?

Hello world!

I'll start and say that I haven't found a post that answered my question, but i could be wrong...

I want to build few high quality amps. 🙂

I want to build up to three amps, but the number of names I saw here was a bit too large for me...
These are amps I found so far and thought to build:
JLH, Hiraga, Dx amp, diyab "Honey Badger", 100W Ultimate Fidelity Amplifier, etc...
Let me ask it this way:
What are the three diy amps that I must have/build?

And after all that, I need three Pre-Amps too. 🙂

I would like to hear your opinion about the best amps and pre that came out of this site.

Thanks,
JonKarni

P.s

Sorry, English...

1/ The original JLH69 correctly and properly built.

2/ Doug Selfs Blameless Class B

3/ An LM3886 chip amp.

All will work with just a passive volume control. I would actually say also to narrow it down to two and build just 1 and 2 above and see which "type" of sound you prefer.

The original JLH69 is the AC coupled one from 1969. John Linsley Hood did a revised version many years later that enabled it to be DC coupled to the speaker. I've also seen various versions of it since, some with a differential input stage which just destroys the whole character of the original. Do the original... you won't be disappointed.

The question you should ask is what type of speakers and the load and then what amp to drive them well.
Nothing worse than putting a small amp on inefficient speakers and then saying the amp sounds bad.

The Krells drive most anything

David

How much power do you want/need? In the 10W range, JLH1969 and Hiraga. I didn't like Hiraga. YMMV
80-100w range, Ultimate Fidelity AX-14 SX-14 NX-14, ovation nx, DX Super A, VSSA, Ovation sx, TMG8.
150+ range, Slewmaster any version, Honey Badger.

All in no particular order.

Actually, I already ordered the JLH-69, in fact, it just arrived 🙂
I assumed that someone will put it on the list...

From those amps, who will be the winner at 10W?

I don't think I'll need more than 60W, but, what I am looking for is the sound quality, so I shall build the high quality amp.

I am looking now for maximum of three amps, I am looking for votes to see which amps get the highest rating.
After there will be enough suggestions i'll try to open a poll.

I don't know if you need PCBs or if you can etch your own. My favorites in the medium power range are the VSSA variants. Look at the Peeceebee thread for the simplest version. Very few parts but wonderful sounding amp. The Apex AX-14,(Ultimate fidelity), is another great one in that range that uses easy to source parts and sounds wonderful. Works well on low bias so doesn't need a large heatsink or PSU.

Lots of other choices, these are just two I feel good about suggesting.
