Please check these parts for SSE?

Hi All,

I have been making a parts list for building my first ever amplifier SSE with KT88 tubes.
It will be powering my Kirishima horns (Fortex Fe206En)

Can you please help me check the parts I had to find a replacement for form the original parts list because I have no knowledge in this area?

Also please take a look at my other parts selected?

Thank you
Jock

120uF 500V Electrolytic cap

0.22uf 450+V coupling cap (of 600V)
AURICAPXO76011 QTY ADD
0.22uF / 600VDC XO Series, Metalized Polypropylene Cap, 0.52"D x 0.75"L

0.47 100V Mylar cap

1200 PIV FRED diode
RHRP15120 Fairchild Semiconductor | Mouser

Other:
Power Choke Triad C-14X 6H

Auxiliary power supply cap - ASC 100uF 370 VAC motor RUN (not start) cap

Run Capacitor 100 MFD uf 370 440 V Vac Volts Round AC Electric Motor HVAC | eBay

Output Transformer (2x) 2 x Edcor CXSE25-8-5K
Power Transformer Edcor XPWR035

All those parts look suitable for the SSE. You can probably get most or all of the parts to populate the board from DigiKey, saving on shipping cost.
The motor run cap is fine.
The choke is a suitable one. I assume you will mount it under the chassis as
it doesn't have the bell caps to give a nice finished look.

The transformers you've chosen are exactly the same as what I have in my SSE. I can tell you that these will give you great performance.
For a bit more money you can also get an Edcor choke, this choke is what I have in my SSE
https://www.edcorusa.com/cxc125-10h-200ma
This is also a suitable one for less money -
https://www.edcorusa.com/cxc100-7h-150ma

Good luck with your build.

Almost ready to order the parts.
A questions about the chokes

From the chokes below, trying to decide which one:
Which one would be most suitable and why? (don't know what the specs mean)
Are there any differences to be expected in sound quality?

Triad C-14X - 6H, 200 mA, 150 ohms

https://www.edcorusa.com/cxc125-10h-200ma

https://www.edcorusa.com/cxc100-7h-150ma

Thank you
Jock

One difference is DC resistance, one is 75, one is around 100 and you say the Triad is 150.

If you run PSUD, you'll get different B+ voltages depending on what inductor you use, but it also depends on the power tx and the value caps.

But in general the more resistance the lower the voltage.

I can't say if there would be any sound quality difference. Any difference would probably quite small.
I got the Edcor cxc125-10h-200ma. Here is my reasoning...

I got all my transformers including choke from Edcor in one shipment. The total shipping cost to
Toronto, Canada was $126.00. The difference in cost between
the cxc125-10h-200ma and cxc100-7h-150ma is just $15.00 and the smaller choke
would have resulted in only $3.00 less total shipping cost so for me it was a no brainer to
chose the cxc125-10h-200ma.
My transformers along with this choke gives me great performance from my SSE.

Thanks for all your input!

I found out that this part (resistor 10kOhms 3 W) is out of stock at mouser
283-10K-RC Xicon | Mouser

Can this be used as a replacement?
ERG-3SJ103V Panasonic | Mouser

I notice that there's a difference in temperature coefficient 350 vs 300 PPM / C and the operating temperature range -55 to +235C vs -55 to +70 but do not know if this is relevant for use in the SSE.

Thanks again
Jock

Hi Jock,

This is looks like a better alternative:
ROX3SJ10K TE Connectivity / Neohm | Mouser

Thanks,
Bibin

Thanks Binbin,
You're right, the specs match exactly. Unfortunately minimum order on that one is 1000...
Best regards,
Jock

Jock, MOQ of 1K is too much.

I am also in the process of building the SSE. Two day before only I created a project in Mouser and a imported the BOM. Every thing was in stock that time.

I also want to find an alternative for this now.

I had also selected the same output transformers (CXSE25-8-5K), yesterday I contacted Edcor and current lead time is 6 weeks.

Actually my brother is travelling from Boston to India first week of November and I need to arrange everything before that. Now thinking about Hammond which is available at mouser.

Let me know if you came across any alternative for that 10 Ohms resistor. The next alternative I got is this,

MOS3C103J KOA Speer | Mouser

By the way from where you are getting the tubes. I am looking it at parts express.

Thanks,
Bibin

Thanks Bibin & Spendorite,

These seem to fit the bill.
Planning on ordering the last parts tonight🙂

I'll have them somewhere by the end of this month here. The Edcors will take some more time to produce and then ship by boat. But that's ok, enough to be done in the meantime.

I can see where your shipping costs may be approaching the cost of your parts, especially the transformers though shipping these by surface mail should be cheaper.

I'll need to ship the transformers to Miami FL and from there trough a freight forwarder to Aruba. By boat it will be charged based on dimensions of the package. The latter part will take between 1 and 2 weeks

A friend of mine will bring the other parts for me from Miami on his flight back here.

My Parts list also done, will place the order today.

bibin3210,

A comment on the coupling caps - some folks (including myself) have gone for more fancy caps like Auriocap, Clarity, Jantzen superior Z etc. As I have not done any head to head comparison will not be able to comment on the real life difference between your choice and such caps. Since you plan to order from PE, you can look up the Jantzen Superior Z and see if it fits your overall plan/budget:

Jantzen 0.22uF 1200V Z-Superior Capacitor

The EH 12AT7WC tube doesn't have good feedback on the PE site (albeit the application for the customer was not a hifi amp). Anywhere else you read reviews?

BTW, you will need 3 x 8 pin socket for 2 x EL34 and 1 x 5AR4.

1 x 9 pin tube socket for 12AT7. (Probably you already knew that 🙂)
