Philips FB815, close cabinet speakers question.

I am close to renew the foam surrounds of my speakers, two 8” woofer and two 4” midrange ones.
Some one for Belgium told me that I would need special foam which is capable for further free movement than the usual speakers for open cabinet operation.

My woofers are about 70-80 Watt RMS at 8” with 73mm magnet diameter.
2014 Speakers PHILIPS FB815 Digital, ready for foam surrounds replacement

And I do wonder of how much if any? The ordinary foam will influence the over all performance.

I am aware that I would have to use plain foam and nothing other so to come close to original frequency response, but this story about free movement distance, if it is true, I am suspecting that will affect things only at full volume.

Alternative I have to ask if there are any manufacturers selling 8” woofer described as for use only in a close cabinet.

I do not thinkt that about movement holds true for your speakers. What is important is edge termination of the cone and resistive losses. Specialized subwoofer drivers can have very long stroke and might need suspension for long strokes. The box, the crossover and the driver look like standard Philips drivers. Good quality but nothing exotic or fancy just solid engineering. You should be fine with ordinary foam surrounds.

Thanks for your feedback.

He actually wrote to me the text below:
The FB815 needs surrounds for very large movements of the woofer-speaker (TYP.15 mm)

Therefore is there any way to be aware of the free movement spacing of one foam surround before getting it?
Let me explain ... if for example the hight of the curve is 15 mm this translates that I am good to go, right ?

There is a dutch suplier that delivers very good surrounds. He has most of its surrounds made up to specs. Álso for the 800 series. Ive done a pair of 825's in the past. Look for audiofriends.

As for the units them selves, nothing extraordinairy and for sure not long trow or something like that.

Yes it is also mentioned on their website ... we are not a company selling underwear 😀

The point is that I feel now very happy even by the thought that I will feel soon the magic coming from those pair of speakers.
My satisfaction with them was at 95% when they was functioning.
They can not imitate a sub woofer and are poor performers when playing nights clubs booming music, but when music is produced by natural musical instruments they do sound as a live band in front of you.
This model is also an tremendous performer at Jean Micher Jarre music.
Therefore they are designed for my taste of music, and this makes them special to me.

You will have to play them in after fixing the new surrounds as mentioned on the site.
As for JMJ I played it on the fb 825 and sounded nice but loved it on the Elipson 1303.
Perhaps it was a better match cause they are both French 🙂.

Enjoy your renewed speakers

Thanks mate, I am on the second week regarding waiting, you comment about to play the speakers drived me back on their website but I did not found some sort of special tip?
As for example... warm up your engine before running it at full speed. 😛

But I did discover that they do shipping by using a pizza box.

Yes he ships with a pizza box so the surrounds dont have to be folded to fit in a envelope.
The surround has to be run in, just as new speakers have to run in.
A faster way is to place both speakers with the fronts almost against each other reverse 1 speaker connection and play a frequency sweep for a few days so the surrounds settle in more quickly.
