Has any one here explored the potential of using a synology or Qnap NAS as a music server with a direct USB digital out to a USB DAC..??
The idea is to have the music stored at the NAS and then direct it via USB out from the NAS to a DAC in the music system, and thus avoid the music data on the Wifi
For controlling the NAS/music library I intend to use an Ipad APP, anyone here that has tried that and can give any directions where to find good working and easy to use music-players for IOS and Android
What about the different music formats, will the USB DAC be able to process them..??

This would require your NAS to be able to work as an audio class host. I don't think there are any products like there just yet.
Even the media player type of storage units do not recognise audio devices, only storage devices.
If you are handy with programming, you could probably write your own code if the interface chips on the host are compatible with all types of USB peripherals.

I think the synology NAS should be able to do that. I haven't tried it but, from what I have read you coould just plug in a USB spdif converter directly to the NAS, and remote control it via the webplayer.
We'll see, I'll try and buy the synology and see if I can direct the audio-strem to the USB.
Will be fun to see what file formats the NAS cen handle Ian what formats I can put out

I have a synology but have not tested. But the USB port can be used with a USB DVB-T tuner and record and stream live TV (I have tested this and it works, but it's not as plug and play as windows media center), so why not a USB DAC.
somehow I don't fancy the synology remote option, better the USB speaker option.
I have my eyes on the Qnap HS 210, that is a fan less unit with a two HD slots. looks nice and is noise free. but i don't know if it has the USB speaker option.

I have just added a link with supported USB DAC invluding spdif/optical outputs.
You can always control it with the web interface

I'm also thinking of using a cheap android tablet as "remote control", but I'm missing a spotify app on the synology.
spottify is compromised anyway, so that you can stream via airplay and Apple TV with optical out, Wimp would be better, as they have full CD quality stream.
Spotify is for "spotting" good music. I typically go for modern pop/rock/indie and I must admit that that I can't here the difference of FLAC compared to 320 kpbs from spotify.
Anyway If I like it I buy the CD or download (if WAV og flac is possible), and put it on the NAS and play via win7-->foobar--> spdif out--> MiniDSP.
Sorry - I'm getting of topic - back on track again 🙂
I will see where you end, it might be interesting.

just trying to get a simple USB output solution that can handle my collection of studio formats. if possible then one can aim for optimizing the transfer, My USB DAC has reclocking.
I got my Synology NAS running, I use the USB speaker output direct to MY USB DAC, this works flawlessly. I RIP my CD's to in NAS in WAV format and place then uncompressed on the NAS. I have also tried FLAC, but I do get the best sonic result with WAV. I use my Windows computer to rip the Files to the NAS.
For IPaD play control i use the DS-player. its really easy to navigate and make playlists.

What compression level did you use with FLAC? Some DACs seem to struggle with level 8.

Just a note - DACs receive decoded PCM. It is possible some USB DACs allow for very short max period time and the particular CPU does not keep up when decoding.
