Recommend a woofer for an almost FAST desktop speaker

Hello again,

I'm consider making some little desktop speakers using the PRV 5MR450 drivers (which xrk has spoken highly of recently), plus some woofer.

My requirements are:
Front face of the speaker is no further than about 18" from the wall.
The speakers will flank the sides of my two LCD monitors.
Maximum width is 7" for the speaker.
Prefer a sealed box.
I do have a sub, but I would like this to play low enough that I can cross over without localization effects (e.g. 60 Hz or so), or if it goes low enough, not to use the sub at all.

I don't care which way the woofer points- forwards, upwards (like Linkwitz Pluto), sideways (as long as it doesn't shake too much), etc. I guess as long as it crosses over ok with the PRV driver.

One driver I had in mind was the Tang Band W6-1139SIF. The bonus is that I can also get it from Parts express with free shipping. Another one that gets mentioned is the Anarchy woofer, although I don't know much about it.

I have a miniDSP, so XO and EQ are available.

Incidentally, what is a good enclosure to use for the PRV driver in this situation? OB, sealed, k-tube sticking out the back, etc?

I went for somewhat of the same thing. I have the ff85wk in a uFonken box. Which are at about ear level about 18ish inches away and 42ish inches apart. Under the monitor bridge which is about 8" high I built a sealed sub using a 5 1/2 speaker, so its right under the speakers and in the same plane.

The success has been mixed. The directivity/phase is very cohesive, but since the sub doesn't go very low, and the 3" speakers don't go very low being well, 3" speakers, I do get some localization, but I don't notice it when I'm actually doing something on the computer.

But future projects are going to try to work on that. With desktop speakers that go lower, and a sub that goes lower.

But since you are looking at 5" speakers your situation will be somewhat different WRT to frequency response from the speakers on the desk.

Glad to see you like the 5MR450NDY but those things are beasts capable of SPL levels that will rip your face off if sitting nearfield. Do you really need that much sensitivity and high power capability for a desktop speaker? You can always power it with a sub 1 watt amp and it will be loud enough. 🙂.

Try the Faital Pro 4FE35 or 3FE25 and if you want Nd magnets get the 4FE32 or 3FE22 they are 91dB sensitive and take up to 20 watts and have higher freq reach.

For woofers try a pair of these in series on each side.

Not that distortions are not unimportant, just that the way it is measured is not useful.

Meaningless to you maybe. You have to quantify performance somehow. I will take a driver with inherently low distortion over a higher distortion one. It's purity of tone, some people prefer higher 2nd order HD, but odd orders sound bad and are noticeable. And this is about the third time you have told me this Planet10, let it rest and move on.

excursion is useful, and it varies a lot, implying various
distortion profiles, as very detailed on Klippels site.

All measurements are useful, correctly intepreted.
A spot measurement, e.g. 1W doesn't say much.

Of coutse low distortion (in the broadest sense) is important, but the only scientific study done on the subject produced the result that how we measure it does not tell us what that distortion is.

If you want really low harmonic distortion the 5MR450NDY will beat just about any driver out there - if that is what you are aiming for then go for it. I would use a Nautaloss cabinet or a sealed 5 liter lined with foam and stuffed with polyfill.

What would be nice (but not required) is if these speakers could also double as stand-mount speakers for non-nearfield use. Whether it is due to harmonic distortion or something else, I want them to play loud without getting "shouty".

Is there any difference in sound quality between the PRV and Faitals when not playing loud?

And why do you recommend the smaller 4" Tang Band over the larger one I initially mentioned?

Hi, Absolute nonsense in all respects, rgds, sreten.

Geddes often conveniently overates his competence,
and conveniently ignores anything contrary to opinion.
The idea his is the only scientific study is ludicrous,
but consistent with bigging up your own opinions.

Klippel is the first reference for bass distortion.

Great line Dave!

A distortion is discrepancy, a deviation from the input, an error, added energy or lost energy, its wrong and all distortion is bad...

Some worse than others but all distortion is bad if one is aiming for the most perfect sound reproduction possible.
Ie a system from end to end that is just a " straight wire with gain" as the great Peter Walker of Quad once said about his amps.
Personally I believe time domain errors are more serious and more audible than frequency domain errors.

Size mainly because you said you were making small desktop speakers. OTOH of you want loud speakers capable of PA duties these sound great.

Sorry for the pronoun confusion. "These" = 4" or 6" Tang Band drivers?

Also, the speakers don't have to be that "small", only max 7" width. (height max about 14" if necessary, depth max 10" or so. The main limitation is that they are squeezed up against the side of my monitors and about to fall off the edge of the table. I mean, ok, maybe the base can be a little wider even. 🙂 )
