10p Pensils as main speakers? How good are they, really?

I had the alpair 12p. IMO, the highs were not clear enough, not enough air. Also, the bass was flabby, maybe due to the bass reflex enclosure. I would recommend to use the MA for a extended mid range.
something like 100hz to 6-7 khz.
However, I have heard a lot of difference fullrange, and the alpair was the best I had heard. Its just that full-range has limitation that some accept and others dont.
I loved the midrange though, and will likely get a alpair 7 crossed to a subwoofer, but for a main system, I much prefer a 2-way or 3-way.

So China-tripath won't cut it? What about class d? Nuforce dda-100 is on my shortlist...

Amplification comes down to personal preference. My other (summer) amp is a Sure 2X100w based on TC2000 and STA508 (so it is still called "TK2050").

I changed the input caps on it to Roederstein film/foil and installed an extra 6000uF of power caps. Also, I am powering it with a very good supply. To me it sounds fantastic, especially for the price. Comparable to my tube amp, but missing some of the "richness" or "body". Certainly nothing to complain about, as I only intend to use it during the hottest summer months.

I see. I use a TA2024 amp with mammoth-power (2x15w) and it sound good to me, but the Nuforce gets a lot of praise and I liked what I heard on another pair of speakers, but maybe tripath is good enough...

I have only tried 2 flavours of Tripath 2020, one from Lepai and one considerably better. They are both very good if used within their limits and they both fail miserably when you ask for more. I quite often ask my amps to give me more than 20wpc, and these amps fall apart at about 12w, IMO.

Stick with the TA2024 for now. Certainly good enough to gently break in the Alpairs. Think about different amps after you have had a chance to break in the drivers and properly evaluate the combo. Just my .02

After reading some buzz on these forums a few weeks back, I ordered one of those $88 DIY kit TPA 3116 amps from Chinese vendor ( Yuan Jing) - with shipping and currency exchange, it landed here for a total of about $145 CDN

This was more or less on a lark, and replaced a several (at least 5) years old Kingrex T20 & outboard power supply - powering main living room system ( CHBW70 & ERT26 ) that never gets far about mid 80s SPL. . I also have Topping TP30s at both home and work desktops - driving 3" Fostex.

To make a long story short, this little amp is no joke, and for only $25 more was available fully assembled. As it came lacking any instructions and with miscounted parts, it took rather longer to put together than I'd hoped - next time I'd definitely spend the extra $25.

I probably won't get much time to play all 6 or 7 pairs of speakers on it before departing for holidays in later this week, but do look forward to some time when I get back.

chris,

That seems really expensive for a TPA3116 kit. Did that include a power supply? Chassis? Gold bullion?

No gold bullion or AC input module, but SMPS, aluminum chassis & knob, volume control, input & speaker jacks & wiring.

Sure, the freight & currency exchange almost doubled the $88 kit price, but it saved me the time & expense of sourcing parts and fabricating a nice little metal chassis - which is certainly one of the reason old farts like me are less excited about building electronics than say, speaker enclosures.

Ah, OK. I see now. That's not a bad deal after all. 🙂 I look forward to hearing your impressions of it.

yup, that's the one - either DIY or pre-built, I'd still opine this as a reasonable deal - the cost of doing a chassis this nicely would be more than the amp module and PSU together, I'd imagine.

Note that the same site has a wide range of higher powered TDA series offerings - including some with built in 24bit 192KHz DACs, but none as complete parted out kits such as this. The most expensive prebuilt unit is IRS2092 (250W PC ? 😉) at $205.00

I just might shop there some more - have to engineer a need first, though 😀

Chassis? Schmassis!!!

"President's Choice" to the rescue!

(big apologies for the terrible photos)

Hi Chris, if you've been following the big TPA thread here and at audiocircle then you'll know although the stock amp sounds great it only gets better with some basic parts swapping if you have the time.

And as rhing and others have mentioned over at audiocircle high quality RS-12 and higher Astron/Tentec linear supplies can be had inexpensively on ebay and really do wonders for tube-like presentation in terms of tactility and reach out and touch quality that I think would go great with Mark's resolving drivers.
