Is it possible to make a small unit with maybe 1 or 2 tubes in it. I would like to just plug my guitar into the unit, plug the unit into my solid state amplifier. All I want the unit to do is give the sound the warmth of tubes. I cannot see how it could be that hard, or be done without an advanced degree in mathematics.

Tube sound is not that easy, as it fundamentally has
to do with the output stage more than anything else.
In a preamp "tubey" is relatively easy with solid state,
to the extent technology does not matter that much.

What's "tube sound" anyway? Could you point me an example which one of thousands different sounding tube amps has the tube sound? Each indidual likely has his unique idea and expectations of what that thing should be.
What's different?! Many existing amps already do the "tube sound" that way, look them up on Google, or you can make your SS amp warmer "like tubes" too, that's been done as well.

Slight bit of reverb, possibly the term richer with more mid range as opposed to just either treble or bass with nothing in the middle to make it sound less brittle. More depth. You already know it is very hard to describe sound.
It could be compared to the difference of listening to a cheap transistor radio outside as opposed to listening to a CD inside on a better stereo in your living room where the sound has more depth and presence.

Many commercial brands (Marshall, Peavey) have cheap SS amps with an 12AX7 or similar tube in the preamp. They call it Valvestate, transtube, etc.
Dunno how they sound, btw.
if you hav a vox dealer near you go try out a Vox bulldog its 2 channel tube over drive but you can turn the first channel down to "warm" , friend of mine runs one into his fishman sounds good
Can´t post commercial schematics here but google "matchless hotbox schematic" for a more "normal" sound or "soldano supercharger GTO" for a high gain distorted sound.
That will give you ideas as to how experienced commercial designers do it.

That is exactly the type of thing I was looking for. Also in the search I found Freestompboxes
forum. They have a beginners section. I can look thru the previous questions and maybe find the
answer before having to ask the question.
Thank You very much. I chose the matchless, now I can run that and the SS amp will just act
as sort of a PA to convey the tube sound.

OK after looking over the Matchless Hotbox, isn't it just a simple tube amplifier with the jacks at the line in line out ?
I have a simple amplifier I made from a Magnavox record player with two tubes per side (6EU7 - 6QB5). I am currently turning it into Angela Super single ended amp.
Could I just use the line in and line out on that to do the same thing ?

The hotbox is a preamp. You can put a jack on the output of a preamp.
Your schematic above shows a preamp into a parallel single ended power amp (but I'm not sure if the output transformer wiring is correct). You cannot just replace the speaker with an output jack unless you intend to plug a speaker into it i.e. you cannot use it in the same manner as a hotbox.

Look at the schematic on post 1396 on page 140 of the 100 buck amp challenge on this forum.
I have included a line out jack - as well as a speaker jack - and I have used it between guitar and solid state amp with good result.

I went to the page you suggested (1396,pg140), Thank you. That is what I am attempting, however I printed it and it is not distinct enough to read the resistor values and such.
At any rate it lets me know I am on the right track.
