Hi,
High-end strives to take audio reproduction well beyond hi-fi to take it closer to the true reproduction of recorded sound in the home.
In an ideal world using PC-speakers? Really?
Ciao, 😉
So what do you mean by high end?

correct audio presents what's on the recording, and then gets out of the way, you should be totally unaware of a process of reproduction taking place if all is in order.

A simple example: suppose you know someone who has a very good listening room, and someone else (maybe yourself) who has a pair of very good speakers (or even a single very good speaker).
With a few hours of time you can 'record' the acoustic signature of a) the listening room, b) the speaker as it plays in that room, and c) your ears and your headphones' transfer function.

Jan, I think you are overstating in a subtle way the capabilities of this system (or at least stating its capabilities in a way that folks might get the wrong idea). You indeed can "steal" the response of great speakers in a good room but including the concept of a great hall like Symphony Hall in Boston in this context is meaningless. You could calibrate for a pair of speakers at center stage not exactly what one wants.

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears, and the summit of his knowledge.
This is the dimension of imagination.
It is an area, which we call the Hi-end .......

Looks scarey, I think I'd run away.
More scary , 12 channels of amplification ...🙂
A bunch of T-amps?
Hhoyt, I used some custom heads and some stock Studer reproduce heads and got response down to 10Hz at 30ips, and good square wave response to 30Hz. I did not use a typical bass equalizer, however.

The question then is what is "true reproduction" - for me it is that the sound is totally convincing, I no longer think of there being a "record on", instead I'm listening to a group of musicians, or a musical creation in the case of completely synthesized sounds - that's always the goal.High-end strives to take audio reproduction well beyond hi-fi to take it closer to the true reproduction of recorded sound in the home.
Don't get hung up on the technology I'm using, this is a means to an end, no more than that. My "way" is that if I'm handed a $100 ghettoblaster I will attempt to extract the most from it, and likewise if I'm presented with a $500,000 system I will hear that it's riddled with audible problems, and will proceed to sort them out - it's all about the approach, I'm after a certain sound and that is the most "correct" sound I can extract from the equipment, given its limitations. In an ideal world using PC-speakers? Rod Serling I think

I remember as a young school kid seeing the first episode of "Outer Limits" on a B&W TV, and it scared me to death! I could barely watch what was going on, I probably missed half the action because I was covering my eyes all the time - ahh, to be young and so open to the message ... 🙂
