Link work's just fine for me BUT those are ugly.🙂
I heard the Duntechs in a dealer (friend) showroom.I have heard both , extensively , the Duntech, is not in the same league, aside, i do agree with you about size ...
I played a few of The Who and Jimmi tracks from a cdp that I had extensively modified.
The result was seriously good in the fairly big and sonically good showroom.
A decade later (install and positioning job) in a huge room (sonically good) with totally different front end playing the same tracks was seriously awesome.
The comparison is not entirely fair....2000W + 2000W servoed bass available from 120Hz down beats pretty much anything excepting a touring PA rig.
VT150s (I think) ran the mid/highs with Classe preamp and ARC cdp.
The Duntechs had an Aussie ME Sound 150 + 150 class A amp, ME preamp and my cdp.
IIRC, the Duntechs had the edge for depth info and mesmerising ability, the Genesis for fantastically huge sound field, and couch shaking power.
I would be happy to have the both 😉.
Dan.
Hey how would you compare/contrast the Orions and Abbey's?
The dynamics definitely goes to the Abbey's. But then if you don't have an enormous room (read: half a basketball court size or bigger), then the Orions are fine. Depending on your preferences, the Orion sound has more "air" with stringed instruments. And I believe it's safe to say that it also goes for its sound in general. It's not a bad thing, really. The abbey does not have as much "air", but has a bit more resolution. The midrange sounds more spacious with Orion, though the Abbey still has more detail, but portrays it in a rounder, richer fashion (maybe because of a dipole magnesium driver (seas excel) vs. B&C compression driver (de250). The Abbey's soundstage can be adjusted, depending on how far you listen. I think it's a tradeoff between imaging the aforementioned soundstage. The closer you listen, the more imaging you get, but will lose it as you listen farther, but gain bigger soundstage. In regards to bass, the Orions are amazing. Even better than the 3 subs I have distributed around the room for my Abbeys. But this is just my .02 cents. Sure, the bass of 3 subs can go louder, but the dipole bass sounds more realistic to me.
Thanks for your time and question.

I haven't had the time to rebuild my own webserver but I had some pictures posted on the Visaton forum back then; The Gate, 4 tower open baffle active speaker system - Visaton Diskussionsforum

I mostly listen in the dark for a reason. 😛
factory made, i was most impressed by B&W 800D on krell amps with the accompainging sub.
Custom build was a full custom 4 way spheric horn system with folded subhorns on TAD drivers with custom active crossover and some rare japanese tube amps i saw in Berlin (don't know the owner, it was a friend who brought me there, she knows the guy...)
But i'm in no way an expert, i'm just starting to explore this issue...

Overall these are the best I've heard. I carefully sampled many of the best systems over my almost sixty years, worked with some of the world's best musicians including Tower of Power, Roy Buchanan, Dr. Patrick Gleeson.
Ray Kimber's Isomic system playing Ray's proprietary Isomic 4.0 software on hard drive (DSD), oodles of Pass Labs class A amps, and eight 7' tall Roger West Soundlab stats (2 per corner) has the detail that only the stats can get, but that system doesn't do stereo, so apples to oranges. Ray's perspective moves farther toward the room center but overall DM LCS spatial effects are possibly better, stage as deep or deeper, layering possibly a tie, but DM LCS might render and differentiate better image height. (Ray's same overall system with four TAD Ref 1 replacing the eight stats was two steps lower IMO.)
Stereo high points outside the control room include Infinity IRS III in dedicated room, Duntech Sovereign, Shahinian Obelisk, IMF's flagship transmission line mid-late 80s, VMPS early 80s Strathearn true-ribbon hybrid system (mono pole, ribbon rear radiation trapped), VMPS RM50 bipolar (Brian's last and best, RIP Brian), MBL 101 Radialstrahler (images too big but what density and what stage size), Bob Crump's (RIP) last CES system with Roger West Soundlab stats 1/3rd into the room and Blowtorch preamp and Halo JC1 amps apparently with bias cranked way up.
Not many reproduction systems adequately replicate Doc Kupka warming up his baritone sax in The Record Plant control room, but DM LCS seems to get more of the effect than anything else.

They have four ribbon tweeters in wave guides, ten 2.5" mid drivers, and two 12" woofers.
They sound more "hifi" than you might expect.
Thing is, I'm a musician, so speakers that can't reproduce music at realistic sound levels are a big fail for me.
Coloration is normal, but I can't stand distortion.
The beauty of the Versarrays, 801's, and the EV Sentry IVs I used to own, is that at reasonable listening levels there's no distortion or compression.
And I don't need "flat" response to tell if Knopfler is playing a Strat or a Les Paul. 😉
Hi and agree completely
Hifi speakers even expensive ones are usually limited in dynamics
When i heard people talking of prodigious bass out from a 4" midwoofer ... well you know better than me.
Personally i like very much the D'Appolito schema
I heard these ones and i like them a lot with a tube amp, sounded very spatial and dynamic
and they were also very cheap (2nd hand). Unfortunately i am always on the move ... but this could very well be my final monitors
but i would like to listen to these ... amazing pieces 😱

But i agree ... low distortion high SPLs is the key for exciting listening
I am so convinced about this that i am thinking to go in the PA direction
Even with very cheap speakers and reworking a little the xover with better parts
Speakers like this i mean
http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-Eurolive-VS1520-PA-Speaker/dp/B0029RRGYA/ref=sr_1_2?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1399442293&sr=1-2&keywords=behringer+1520
difficult to get more for less cash
And above all realistic experience is the main goal
Thanks and regards, gino

Bravo, I like such inputs...
You have also the Seos project with both cheap woofer and compression driver in two ways arrangement like the gedes clone above (but not Dapollito.... do we really need it with compression drivers...)
A new Seos challenge would be fun : the cheaper high efficienty possible ! But the seos waves guide + the driver of its group buy is unepensive yet.

Hi Norman,
Could you please say a bit about these speakers and how they sound?
Thanks!

a focused array.
9 x 4" tangband w4-1337 (ferite). mids and highs to die for. basically a 12" full range but with clarity of a much smaller driver. No awful whizzers.
No crossover to muck up the phase. Wide dispersion.
very headphone like but image is in front of you instead of inside your head. Sound seems to come from the middle 3, unlike a "tall" image that a line array presents.
But, distance sweet spot is a foot or so deep. It throws a lot of sound around a room. Sounds fine out of sweet spot, just not as good. And if you are a bass-head, you will need woofer support. I detest crossover points over 100hz (male voice). That requires some serious cone movement and baffle step to get down there with authority. And this needs a bit of baffle step due to 6" wide baffle. I've had a double 15 crossed at 750hz for so long, I'm used to serious pounding effortless bass. Now I have a super clean horn with jbl 2407 crossed at 2khz to a 4ohm 8" silver flute. But I always hold a spot in my heart for the "whole-ocity" (from late Gizmo) of full range drivers.
My wife said these would be ideal for me in another 10 years.
They look awesome too!
Thank you Jason for building them for me.

Hi Norman,
Thanks a lot for responding🙂.
1. Am I correct that the cabinet is curved?
2. How are the drivers wired?
3. Is the cabinet sealed
Thanks!
PS: In order not to hijack the thread I could mail send you a PM....
Best regards
Peter

If the sound is dark like the picture ...
LOL - incorrect assumption but cute 🙂

Hi no really ... do you have a better picture ? or a link to the project ?
The concept seems interesting ...
