I've knows about this phenomenon for quite some time, but I've never really understood how it is possible. This doesn't happen in the case of a resonance in an electronic system, or does it?

I don't believe that it can happen in a one dimensional system like electronics. It is the three dimensional aspect that allows for degeneration of the response into two different frequencies. It is written about in Morse "Vibration and Sound". It is in the very last paragraph in this magnificent book.
