Audiostatic ES500 - advice

Hey all, Just looking into a local trade for a pair of Audiostatic ES500. They look clean, but what worries me is the mylar age - coating. I believe these are quite old and cannot easily be fixed...

They are willing to trade up my Apogee Duetta Sigs...

Also looking into a pair of Maggie MG20.1 too.

I just love that ESL mid, and the Duetta Sigs are very very good, but just don't have that lush mid quality...

Anyone have any advice on the Audiostatics ES500?

I did fix a pair of es500 long time ago and it was just a lot of work (including foil) but not very difficult.
Anything can happen with the AS. If in a dry non smoking area they can be good for >25Y except the metaloxide segmentation resistors AS used, they are mostly damaged after 10y. These resistors are easy to replace.

How old are these typically (from the '80's? 90's?) I don't see or hear much from this brand. There was a distributor nearby that said he had issues with company support, but overall sounded very good.

Are they worth $5k used? I am pretty sure Maggie 20.1 are worth it...there are a pair of ES500 on fleabay now at $3k but cannot ship...

The 20.1 with the pure push pull mids should approach an ESL, correct??

Most second hand (old) audiostatics will definately need Mylar replacement to come alive. Without knowing the original SPL you may fail to recognize an AS with partially loss of efficiency as that can be 'solved' by rotating the volume knob!

well for 5 k i would never. buy a es500 without being in perfect working order. i bought a es200 for 300 euro, the fixing was a pain in the ***. even now i would not do it again.

for 5k i would def buy a new quad or something

I agree with M.J. Dijkstra that lots of AS needs to be af oil replacement but if the owner was very carefull with the esl it can be good.

I also agree with Wrinex that 5k is way to much, the es500 i restored was only €900,-. And for a es100, es 200 or 300 my max would be 300 (if i have to replace the foils).
But restoring can be done succesfully in 2 weekends if you have the right skills and materials.

Btw, the es500 is worth to repaired because is exeptional large for an esl and has much better opportunaties then the es300 type to modify with a real good transformer.
