Thanks for the info, I was considering Clarity ESA, Obbli Golds and the EVO's, supposedly a step up from standard MKP's - but as you already said, only the EVO's are available in larger values

Based on my experience using Solen and Mundorf MKP caps, I will always recommend a cap above your basic MKP. The MKP caps can sound dead or harsh but this is very system dependent.
The ESA line is suppose to deliver a sweet midrange sound and the selection is very good.
Please let us know what you think about the ESA caps if you get them.

wd be interesting to compare with Erse Pulse X, the 400v has thicker film than than the 630v for some reason

I did not test those two caps in the midrange but in the tweeter. For the midrange, I decided to leave the Supremes connected for another 100 hours to see if the sound opens up. I'm considering testing the EVO aluminum oil and EVO aluminum SGO in the midrange.
Yes, the MKP has slightly more punch but I noticed the bass was less refined (less detail) compared to EVO aluminum. The MKP is a "louder" cap but I prefer bass with more detail.
People will either agree or disagree with the Tony Gee review. Unfortunately the only way to know what a cap sounds like is to try it on your own system. Every system has a different sonic signature so adding a cap with either improve it or not. The bottom line is you pick the cap that you like the best. Be sure to play different source material so you get an overall impression of the sound.
I'm interested in the ESA 630V compared to an EVO but I don't know if the ESA has a thick film like the SA.
the esa are good, not as good as the mundorf sil/oil, but I like the mr much better. they sound very natural with everything that I have tried them with. that being SS, focal, hiquphon and seas drivers.
did you compared the mr versus mundorf supreme line ?
if so, which models you compared them?
could you write me the tonal differences you've found between the two?

The ESA is a v different price.. wd you say its a good capacitor for toning down bright tweeters etc?
The ESA used polypropylene film. A cap with polyester film will tone down a bright tweeter a bit because of it's inherently higher ESR that results from the PET vs PP. Some manufacturers call PET film Mylar.

The Puls-X is quite popular with many DIY speaker builders. Tony Gee did not score it well. It ranked in the lower quatrile of the 630 VDC grouping shown in my fitted correlation plot here;

Personally, I'm a bit sckeptical of Gee's entire ratings program due to the total absence of universally accepted scientific methods. Read the paper at the link I provided. It discusses Gee's rating system as it existed about 3 years ago. He has added a number of new caps to the list I evaluated and the good correlation I found between his ratings and cap voltage ratings may or may not exist any more.
I use the Erse Puls-X caps when recapping vintage speakers. However, for a new, high end build, I'd opt for more along the lines of caps that have been discussed in a number of posts here in this thread.
Humble cap test gave a v good rating for the Obbligato golds, but other reviewers say quite different things to Tony Gee regarding the character of these and other caps, its all personal opinion and his test shd not be seen as a bible to cap ratings.
Pulse X use different Dielectric thicknesses and metal film thicknesses depending on the voltage rating, 400v having the thickest film. Which was Tony Gee listening to?
Something that seems apparent 9tho I'm sure someone will say this is rubbish) is that it sometimes takes a long time to burn in capacitors so I tend to read as many reviews as possible to get some kind of balanced opinion.

Audio Nut. My speakers, and therefore my crossovers, are done. I have a number of Duelund CAST PIO's lying around. If you don't mind driving to Brampton, I can let you try a few out. They are magical on tweeters.
