hi guys,

im looking for a 8" woofer to work in a vented enclosure (~70L?- oversized,heavily stuffed,tuned very low for a smooth rollof)
up to 650hz LR2 c/o to DIPOLE on top of a vented cab - BG Neo8(old one without WG, 4ohm, 93dB/2.83V). Active BSC(RC filter). This arrangement allows easy driver offset for minimum phase,and dipole peak will reinforce neo8's low end.

If i choose SS Discovery I'll end up with 93dB/4ohm speaker or 89dB/8ohm with 4ohm series R for BG neo8 with SB woofer. Most other drivers fall short on Spl or Fs. Looked at Fountek, Dayton, Seas, - didnt really excite me, overdamped a bit(imho).

c/o to tweeter,probably around 6khz lr2, maybe even higher as off axis response isn't critical, but i'd like to get most out of neo8s, and keep the tweeter cost down.

I will be using Tripath at first. Proper class A SS amp soon.

I'm looking mostly for dynamic sound and bass extension,quick and tight bass. (higher Qms and Cms, lower Rms and Fs would be preffered) but the woofers are so close.

I would love to hear your opinion.

Perhaps. A single example of ported vs. sealed by simply blocking the port would be an unfair comparison unless they are equalised for a similar response.

An MLTL can be an excellent way to extend the response and they sound good. I'd only use one where the drivers used need such extending, otherwise I'd normally choose sealed.

of course - linear phase software eq will be used to work out the kinks on bsc,sealed/ported,crossover(notches). multiple outputs souncard will be used to examine diff. c/o points.
yeah... of course I'll try MLTL one day. Will check Dayton again, and I'll re-examine Zaph's and Mark K's tests.
Any other suggestions? SB over SS,or otherwise?
 
Dayton doesn't really cut it. Low spl and Qms, and high Fs.
Also found a 10" Scan-Speak, thats only a bit more expensive than 8" one, but still cheaper than 8" SB. How far could I strech it? Somehow doubt it could make 650hz 2nd order c/o, but yes, it would make for a nearly 40hz f3 sealed enclosure. yes, the cone break-up is scary.

A 10" driver should make 650Hz. FWIW I've used 15" drivers at 1kHz using an inductor and RC inpedance rise compensation with acceptable results. Of course I was running it into narrowing directivity so crossing this high suits crossing to a horn tweeter but the point was about breakup. The 10" should be even easier.
