Mr. Altmann has a looong history of similar, ehh, offerings.
I will refrain from mentioning them here as I have no intention to burden you guys with this, but I would advice extreme scepticism.

Battery operated? Has warm wood? Low parts count? Expensive for the components? Simple enough that a diy'er might be able to make one themselves?
Meh. I'd rather spend my hard earned lucre on a Grado RA-1 headphone amp instead. 😀
Unfortunately the grado RA-1 is the same deal as this byob thing: ecp.cc
Low price parts glued to a piece of wood and sold for big money.
yes, yes and yes again
ofcourse I wouldn't buy one single piece of signed wood either, no way
take a look at how many chip amps are built every day
is it better because its in a fancy box
or built by a famous constructor
he claims its better on a certain piece of tested and signed wood
and even mounted with cheapest available speaker connects
I think its funny

Makes you wonder how its even legal.
There should be a law that stuff should never cost more than the total combined value of the parts used.
Charging for the brand name should be forbidden.

yes it is, at least I coul;d bare to look at it then and there would at least be something to look at to see where the money wenttake a look at how many chip amps are built every day

it would be funny if it wasnt accompanied with all the psuedo technical jargon so that those weak of mind werent taken advantage of. either hes one of the better con men around, or he actually believes the crap. because of that he has actual followers, its this type of **** that makes audiophiles look like fools to the technical community and makes companies less likely to take our opinions seriouslyor built by a famous constructor

Yes, interesting.... ecp = E-coli Productions. Even that has a certain ring of BS to it, no? 😉Unfortunately the grado RA-1 is the same deal as this byob thing: ecp.cc

No. Doug's stuff is straightforward and no BS. In fact, he exposed the BS of that Grado unit very effectively and showed how to turn it into something decent.

My overly sarcastic remark was a little too sarcastic I think (I thought that the smiley would have given it away).
No.
At least Altmann does not try to dress up a bad performing amplifier in a fancy box.
That said, I would still not buy one. Or Dan Agostino's amp either for that matter.

Why do you guys claim he is a good con artist, and making a lot of money, etc? I don't think he has sold many of these, if any. 🙂
Looking at the photos of this amp I do not think it is using a TDA chip. There is one TO-3 heatsink used. I guess that it is using something similar to this dual power op-amp: http://www.apexanalog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/PA74-76U_H.pdf

Doesn't look like a TO-3 Package underneath that heatsink to me !!!

OK, guys, how long before someone pops up here criticising us for knocking it without trying it? After all, science can't explain everything! For him to charge that much for what appears to be a chip amp screwed to a bit of wood there must be some secret ingredient which improves the sound, so all us cynics are just jealous that he got there first.
Personally, I think it would sound better if mounted on old English oak - spruce is so northern!
