How can I hook up internet radio stations to my amp

i use an ipad and the shoutcast streaming app to stream via airplay to my apple tv 3 box

which then goes to my amp via optical from the atv3

that will take care of the hardware connection.

I love it how new macs dont even have analog outputs anymore, thats just brilliant (I'm being sarcastic) i suppose you could buy a mac compatible usb soundcard and use that over usb.

Given their demonstrated analog audio prowess on the last several iPods I've owned this might actually be a good thing.. 😀

Relatively decent USB dacs are available for very little money these days, and I suspect the MAC probably supports most generic USB dacs without any fuss..

I don't use the onboard dacs on most of my PCs and honestly would not miss them..

I presume you are repeating something you read about the iphone/ipad? which dont have a analogue line out anymore thats correct, they do have digital audio output and they do have analogue headphone output

you are not familiar with the combo toslink jack?

Is your computer the only option you have for streaming? There are streaming apps for iPad, Android, iPhone, etc. and these devices usually have a 3.5mm stereo jack. Use an adapter cable that transitions to two RCA jacks and plug those into one of the aux inputs of your amp.

My setup uses an iPad dock that is always connected to my amp. We just drop the iPad in there when we want to stream music. I've also used my Android phone. The app I use is called TuneInRadio.

My only source of audio at home is a Windows XP notebook (Compaq F700 series) but with an external DAC. In my case, I have had bad luck with using the line out of notebooks and even sound cards because of noise and/or ground hum. I found a quite cheap solution IF you need to address that: just have a TOSLINK in your digital path. I have a Musiland USB->Digital (optical or coax) and a MUSE outboard (non-USB) DAC. This sounds fine. Also, I can run USB to my "preamp" (a Sheng Xiang DAC-01, cheap and recommend it!) but I need the analog out for some signal processing (DBX expander probably older than you!). Another option for the PC-less is a media player. At least in USA you can get these for well < $100. You are limited to what audio services you can get, but you can also play your mp3 collections from a USB or network drive, at least with the Sony.
