I'm really very sorry that the scans I posted somehow lost quality; if I had zoomed in I would have seen that they were unreadable. Thank you very much for pointing it out and please accept my apologies for not doing a proper job in the first place. Anyway, I'm glad it's all worked out in the end.

Another year, well it's not much to anyone who can remember the Paralines.

A good speaker, but the original units Elac 8N148 and replacement 8N185 really needed a tweeter. Celestion HF1300's were good and made them into an excellent speaker.

The Paralines only needed a few watts to make a lot of nice noise.

I don't have them any more, but I do have a pair of Daline's using a KEF B110, KEF T15 and Coles 4001G.

Basset info

I remember well reading about the Basset in my youth, when that issue of HFN came out. Despite huge pressure, my father resisted all exhortations to build one to go with his pair of Wharfedale Super 12 / Super 3 speakers (in adjacent corners of the lounge) in sand-filled corner cabinets saying that he thought the bass from those was sufficiently good for most purposes. So I never did get to hear one.

However, things have moved on a bit and as I now have suitable drivers available I'm quite curious to build one - but finding plans (or that elusive issue of HFN) seems a tall order. Does anyone have a set of plans, or can offer a scan of the original Basset article? I think it was penned by Trevor Attewell, but my memory may be playing tricks this far on. Any help gratefully received.

There were no less than 3 bassets in HFN &RR.
1969 The Basset
1978 The Basset II
Later still the Basset 16 that just had the box shape in common, as it contained two closed boxes for 12" units.

I have located the Basset II article. As far as I can tell the box is the same and the setup with four 8" drivers is the same. The crossover is changed. I can scan the Basset II and post it perhaps for X-mas?

"The Basset" by Trevor Attwell Parts 1-3 HFN&RR June-August 1978

If I remember right, the original used 4 x Elac drivers, the 1978 one used 2 x KEF B139 and the final version used 2 x KEF 12" drivers (three point mounting vintage). Attewell said at the time that the sealed configuration was chosen to match the extra bass extension of CDs and was cleaner than the quarter-wave loading.

Some years later, Richard Lord (just before he set up REL) produced a similar-looking, window seat subwoofer. It was a TL, designed to put the traditional TL 'null' to coincide with room modes and balance them out. Quite clever.

Thanks again for the article. Do you by any chance have the active crossover details referred to at the end of the article? If not, it's not too much of a bother as I have two 500watt plate subwoofer amplifiers I can play with, but I was wondering how they might compare with the (potentially ideal) performance from the intended crossover designed for the job. Chris
