Just looking at opamps on ebay and was wondering whether fake (substandard copies of) opamps is something I have to be on the look out for?
Seconding wwenze, buying opamps online is quite safe. Nothing to worry about.
(only caveat: don't buy anything off ebay, that's ALL fake.)

Well not everything on ebay is fake, that's certain - I buy tonnes of stuff on ebay, and plenty of legit businesses do business on ebay too. But I've never bought opamps on ebay and am not sure whether opamps are known to be faked/copied regularly.
Don't tar Ebay with a fake brush.
It's the amoral greedy fraudsters that are at the root of the fakes problem.
Ebay and the Authorities should in my opinion be doing a lot more to remove Fraud adverts from the systems and taking criminal action against those that get caught defrauding the public.

I've sold thousands of parts on ebay and I've never knowingly sold a fake. All the parts I sell come from major US distributors.
That being said, after reading this article the other day I guess you can never be certain no matter how trustworthy the source....
