I thought the driver size is, according to your diagram, is it based on the PCD? The specs read 130mm driver. 130mm/25.4mm=5.11811etc.. therefore a 5 1/4 inch driver, no?
Wouldn't the cutout from the driver you suggested at 150mm would be way to large to fit the cutout left from the 130mm driver?

You haven't even unscrewed the plastic cover yet, have you? 😡
Here's the vital statistics again...
You need a tape measure and a screwdriver. Is it that hard?
Mate, you gotta get stuck in here. This ain't theory, this is roll your sleeves up time. We'll make a builder of you yet. 😀

Hi, sorry, nope, I haven't removed anything cause these are my only set of speakers I have right now. If I start taking these apart, I've committed to no music / TV at home until I've put them back together!
I'll do this tonight and let you know what I get back in terms of measurements. Thanks for your patience!

Cut out size is 140mm
PCD is 170mm
Max width is 160mm
Does that make sense? I thought the PCD would be smaller.. but I measure twice.. plastic nub to plastic nub.

Hi,
Yes. You need a very specific driver frame for it to fit
properly and the trim ring to properly clamp the driver.

HeHe. Nailed it! The Morel CAW638. Flippin ACE unit. Vented polycone. Needs bolting down, because that PCD match is a big ask. 😀
You can dig through Morel's whole 6" range here:
Morel Loudspeakers - Raw Drivers - Woofers
But that Morel appears in plenty of high end kits around 20L vented, matched with CAT298 and CAT 308 tweeters.

HeHe. Nailed it!
Hi,
Hardly. £206 a pair delivered in the UK is not nailing it.

Oh do shut up, sreten. You're just a cheapish sort of person! Go back to your car-boot sales...😀

Hi,
Just because it fits, (it won't allow the trim ring to be reffitted), is a cheap
and poor argument to suggest a driver that is very different to the original.

Why do I always have this image of Doctor Zachary Smith of Lost in Space pop into my head when I read your stuff? 😀
Seems to me the spincycle79 wants to build his own eventually. This superb driver would be a head start in the long run. I'd say it's an elegant solution, unless you have a better one, that is... 😎
These guys are great if the drive units still around .If someone has already said it apologies as I was just off to bed . They even do Altecs .

Hmmm...
I'm not sure I really want know about what goes on in your head.
Personally I try to refrain from thinking ill of those who don't agree.
Superciliousness is really about how seriously you take your own
opinions in regards to other opinions, conjecture is open to comment.
Whatever, your suggesting starting down a path nothing to do with
the original post, its not pragmatic and nowhere near elegant. You
can't put expensive drivers, (in the case of Morel from what I've
seen of tests overpriced), in cheaper speakers and expect an
overall improvement without a full and proper redesign.
If a good value driver turns up that could work its worth trying.
If the lines in the drivers are more cosmetic than cracks I'd simply
cover them up (by spraying) and leave the speakers as they are.
There is a pair of 732's on e-pray.uk at the moment, be interesting
to see what they go for in 24 hours, and practically consider what
you could actually get used for the cost of the pair of Morel drivers.
My take on spincycle79 predicament is far more mundane,
he wants to replace the bass drivers if he can sensibly.
I don't sense a total rebuild / redesign is wanted / needed.

Hi,
Forbidden Planet us where Krell nicked their name from, and IMO
is in a different league as a film to the Lost In Space TV series.

Hi Folks,
Thanks for searching for drivers for me - much appreciated. Sreten you have a point, this idea of this exercise is to keep the price down, and putting those wonderful drivers in a relatively cheap speaker isn't exactly my goal. I'm content with a drop in replacement.
I considered the "spray" option, but when I opened up the speaker, and felt the poly cone, it's actually bent at each crack line. It's just a matter of time before air passes through those cracks and the driver is completely compromised.
nigel pearson, the link you provided isn't working. sorry!
So, am I out of luck? I searched through the parts express catalogue without any matches.
Cheers,
spin

Old speakers ,
I found paper cone speakers are better once repaired . Use cigarette papers and a small amount of slightly dilute wood glue ( PVA ) . Many old radio have come back to life this way . Amassing results . Try it on something not too precious as you might prefer it as it was .
I wish I had a fix for the above , the aluminum foil of Leak came to mind .

Hi,
That does seem terminal in the long run. The problem with replacement
is the "drop in" part, you need a very specific "old fashioned" driver frame
to "drop in" fit behind that trim ring.
Madisound Speaker Store
The above might be compatible with your trim ring if you remove its
gasket from the front. Also consider the thickness needed to clamp
the driver, you may not need to remove all the gasket. Usually
those sort of gaskets can be reduced in thickness in layers.
rgds, sreten.
A picture of the rear of the trim ring would help .....

Okay this is an old thread but i have found a driver that matches quite closely but will fit in. i have 2 damaged woofers but still sound normal. and these are looking great right now https://willys-hifi.com/collections...or-spm-165-8-midwoofer?variant=37531830943918
Okay "fgvfvfgtg" (A moniker that flows off the tongue, if ever I heard one... 🙄) this is a trip down memory lane indeed. But your proposal looks Okay.
I foresee that you must enlarge the 140mm chipboard cutout to 145mm with a roundfile or such, but seems promising.
Cheap is good too in these straitened times. And recycling essential since we must fight Global Warming on all fronts if our children are to stand a chance.
Best regards from Steve in Southsea, UK.

Just had a look at www.marktplaats.nl. For the price of one replacement woofer (which looks distinctly different from the original polyconed one) you buy a set of 732's . The 732 s are offered by the dozens.
