Visaton Stella - any thoughts?

I really liked the idea behind the stellas, with a full range and a woofer...
I tell you, if the darn speakers (viech) had a little more, just a little more low end, they would me more than enough for me.
🙁
I don't see what's the purpose of asking for a miracle right in your living room, in front of you. But since you keep trying ask for it in full SURROUND...!😀

With the speakers you have "Beyma 8AG/N + Viech Horn" the low extension you have is not much (can't go lower than 50/60Hz) and it comes in print on the German website (post #33) where it says the low frequency output is -8dB@60Hz.
Technical data:
- impedance: 8 Ohm
- nominal SPL (2.83V/1m): 92 dB
- frequency range (-8dB): 60-20 000 Hz
- crossover frequency: -
- size (HxWxD): 110 x 29 x 50 cm
- back loaded exponential horn

Also from this driver simulation - Beyma 8AG/N, the adequate use for it is only OB (open baffle) or SEALED (not so good). This may put the speakers/problem to rest. If you want lower bass (extension), like output lower than 50Hz, you need a new speaker and let the old one go.:wave2: It might also work as a good mid/top driver as you said in your new setup.

But the viech don´t need no tweeter, believe me! I removed the dustcap and inserted a kind of phase plug (little drawer knobs) and it worked amazingly well!

I´ve been thinking lately about adding the BSC to them, but they sound so cool already!
The sound they put out is just so effortless... a friend of mine recently auditioned a Rega brio amp, with rega loudspeakers and he just told me that as much as that system would cost, (over 1700 euros) it didn´t match my humble setup, a nad c316 with the viech...
Another way of preserving your setup, as I said before, is to add a sub to your system. Use the "tape out" of the NAD C316 amp to connect an active subwoofer. You can then post the results of your adventure.🙂

When I listen to music, I don´t like to use sub´s... I just put them to work when watching movies, but thanks anyway. 😉

Inductor, I found some sort of solution to stick to the frs8m idea and a nice 8" woofer, but in a normal loudspeaker box, kind of like a tower. Problem is, I can´t post here something that´s not mine...

Try me. Post a link, to give the owner the credits (and give him a call).🙂

sure will do... 😉
Looks like a STELLA LIGHT on steroids. Instead of the Visaton W170 S-8 and the Visaton FRS 8-8 it's using the W200 S + FRS 8M in granite...!
Visaton W 200 S 8 OHM
Visaton FRS 8 M 8 OHM
Series crossover here
Crossover point 800 Hz
Minim. impedance 6 Ohm@120 Hz
Dimensions for ref. are 900/250/260
Let's name them the "STELLA v.200." Well you can call it what ever you want I'm just naming them to differentiate from the originals STELLAS.😀

I guess we could call this project the stellaroids! bad joke hey?...
I´m about to start some mini monitors with a pair of tweeters I had around here, If I can manage to find them a loving home, I´m starting this one! 🙂
Full range immediacy with low end? c´mon, It must sound great!

mono input.

thus the low price , hadnt noticed , just buy 2 then 😀

i only use subs to flatten(help)the low end that way i dont need big "coffins" , my room is only 2.5m x 4.5 , space is precious 🙂 , i hate that booming sound associated to subs , mine sub volume from 1 to 10 is at 2 only

I know what you mean lduarte, but it just doesn´t seem like a pure solution to me...
I like to keep it clean and simple. I guess it´s all down to personal taste right?
Thats why this stella project seemed really good, for not filling up ones room.
Strangely enough, my wife didn´t appreciate it´s looks, she said it looked strange and ugly with the side firing woofer.

I will be needing a sub for my home cinema, but for music, I like to keep it simple... 🙂

p.s.: thats a very cute cat you got there on your avatar!

hi , it´s one of my cats 🙂

i understand what you say , but i like the control the subwoofer gives me over bass no matter the size of the main speakers , and there are certain details in deeper bass in my opinion that only a sub can deliver properly unless you have really big woofers, another good thing about subs is that they relief the mains from heavy bass improving the mid bass. Then again i could be wrong.I only use my setup for music , dont like movies much. Another thing i dont like is vented speakers and that´s another reason for wanting subs 🙂

have you seen the other visaton diy ?

I know what you mean, but sometimes subs seem to be cheating the whole scene...
I guess I´m one of those guys that just drools over ultra detailed monitors. Call me stupid, but I tend to be more impressed with what comes out of a simple two way than a ginormous floorstander.
Maybe if I had a dedicated room, I would think differently?...It´s like cars for me, to be fun it has to be small. Big cars are only good for long trips... you know what I mean?

BTW, what visaton project were you referring to?

A couple of posts back I found out a russian diyer that implemented the frs8m with a relatively big woofer, now that´s gotta kick some *** right? 🙂

I´m really tempted, since I enjoy the little visaton a lot. The only problem is my room.
I just found out major bass nulls where my vieche´s supposedly would deliver the goods.
I have a major suckout at about 60hz to about 75hz. Then, a big boom over 80hz. No wonder I complaint so much... If I would build these babies, bass could be a problem... 🙁

well Ba(s)sically, what I hear is a big room mode at 80hz,then nothing below that, then another room mode at 55hz, but that one doesn´t sound as nasty...
I tried it with some small wharfedale diamonds and they sounded the same way... too dry.
Only a little bit of low bass, nothing up to about 85hz, room mode...etc... acoustics really sucks.
