Destroying is easy - any idiot can do that. Creating is more difficult and satisfying.

haha yes you are right! more then Right! but when you have all these woofers that you cant use? what do you do? 🙂
120Vac into an 8ohm speaker is equivalent to 1800W @ 60Hz.
Would any 1800W rated speaker mounted in free air be able to survive that test?
Did I see a human touching the blown out speaker with the 120Vac still attached?

you guys are getting it all wrong.. the subs were blown or cracked or magnets were lose! dont worry i wouldn't put 120 volts to a woofer that works fine.
well i seen a few videos on youtube putting 120 volts to some big woofers. and they could handle it. its just the long period of time with 120 going into that kills it.120Vac into an 8ohm speaker is equivalent to 1800W @ 60Hz.

are you taking about in my video?
EPIC FAIL - You joined a DIY hifi enthusiasts site TODAY, to show us a video you made blowing up car sub woofers at work? This is not what boredom does. Boredom does nothing by its nature. A stupid and dangerous idea on the other hand......
You or someone else touched the METAL basket of a speaker with 120v passing through its METAL voice coil - that's REALLY dumb.
If your life insurance company sees it (and they will search if you have an accident) - void! If that was at a place of work and your public liability insurance company sees it (and they will search if there is an accident) - void! (If your boss doesn't know - people lose their jobs for less)
The fact the video is dated 19th March, and you joined here today, I'm guessing means you posted it all over the web..........

Tsk tsk, don't try to inject any fun into this party. This is an older crowd with much experience and enough wisdom to be unimpressed by such young and wild behavior 😉... cool light show though🙂
Young and wild behavior? I may have once resembled, er, may have known someone who may have once resembled such remarks.
I'm just now learning the Proper Response for my station in life, which IIRC is "Get Off My Lawn!"

Reminds me of a kid that joined a subaru forum to show a video of the loud fart can of a muffler on his riced out subaru setting off car alarms. Yes he got flamed pretty well for that video as well lol

Mains is grounded to Earth. You are grounded to Earth. If you touch a speaker frame that is shorted to mains hot, do you see a problem? If not you may very well feel the problem. Because many people don't see it this way, at least on this forum there are many posts that warn against non-isolated mains circuitry that may likely come in contact with someone.....Zap!! I have been 'bitten' by 120 mains before and it hurts, but it can certianly be lethal in the right circumstance. This test on a bench around people who are (or should be) aware is bad enough, but it is often the unsuspecting person that pays the price.

The video was sort of fun. I thought the fog and smoke effect shots were well done for a home-brew production. I could have done without the vulgar language in the chosen sound track.
The safety issues that a few here are blowing out of proportion are worth consideration, yes, there was some danger... I can't fathom giving someone a nasty lecture about it unless their activities are somehow endangering me or my family. The act of changing a light bulb with the circuit hot is not far off from the danger going on here. An insulated glove on the hand that is reaching out to keep the speaker from falling would be plenty to reduce this to a mere ordinary circumstance with no significant danger. 120 can be lethal, but in a dry garage, likely with sneakers on, the unlikely "zat" is not life threatening for most healthy humans.
Joining a forum, for the sole purpose of sharing a youtube video; I could do without that.

The only difference is that a light bulb is DESIGNED to be connected to the mains. Connecting anything that is not expressly designed to receive 120/240Vac to the mains is stupid and dangerous. Then Placing this video on the internet IS endangering someones kids - by giving them dumb ideas.
If people want to kill themselves by being stupid in the privacy of their garage - I say it's natural selection at work.
Hello JRKO,
There are a great many drivers out there, that are designed to run on voltages in that range.
Posting videos of doing unsafe things on the internet, is not directly endangering anyone. It is ultimately up to the end user, and, in the case of children, the parents responsibility to either restrict content or manage actions.
If you're such a fan of natural selection through modern accidents, then why did you post anything of concern on the topic to begin with? Seems to me that you would have a higher success rate of killing off the ignorant if you said nothing at all. In other-words, your entire post is a contradiction of itself.

Eric

40 volts sitting in a bathtub can do you in. Although 115 volts can produce different results, from a small tickle - knock you out - or do you in all together.
Voltage across the chest (e.g. R - L arm) is the worst scenario!!!!
I would have hooked all the speaker up in series before blowing up each one ;-)
But that said, there are 20+year old speakers on my bench/shelf.
