diy speaker kits and hello

If anyone has experience with enclosure kits, and how to avoid mistakes selecting speakers for them, I'd appreciate your comments. Or thoughts on building your own cabinets.

I've recently joined DIY. I love equipment and music but am definately a novice and am blown away by some of your knowledgable comments. I build my first two amps and speaker sets a long time ago and want to get back into it. This looks like a great site to learn from.

Hi andya
Usually chossing the cabinet for a peaker is a later step in loudspeaker development. The speakers come with certain inherent parameters and need a box with a specific volume, that matches these parameters. It is not too difficult to calculate a loudspeaker enclosure, once you have determined, which speakers to use and designed the crossover. Sometimes you would also reevaluate the crossover after the speaker cabinet is finished and the speakers in place, just to ensure, that the complete system is optimized. But starting with the cabinet is not a good idea.

Ben...Thanks for the reply and info. I'm just starting to get back into stereo equipment beyond just listening to what I have. Which isnt bad, but reading a lot of posts from diy-ers I really am a novice.

I see a lot of speaker kits that furnish the hardware and instructions and claim quality sound. I also see kits for tube amps. I'm sure you get what you pay for with these, but dont know if that's a good place to start...or just get a good book on speaker design and bone up.

I am upgrading my old dynaco 120 amp, more for nostalgic reasons than anything. What I'm listening to now is a 20 year old yamaha 5.1 in stereo mode and a pair of phase tech 7T speakers. Just got a music hall turntable and cartridge and even that brought out sounds I,ve never heard from my old vinyl.

I,m very serious aout getting back into this, but frankly not very sure how to start. Thanks for your thoughts and I would welcome any others.

As Cal noted above, queries such as this would be more appropriately directed to a specific interest forum - and as far as speakers (kits or full-on DIY) are concerned, you first need to think about whether you want to consider "Full-Range" ( single driver), or multi-way.

Passionate proponents of each abound herein, with not always a lot of common ground, or to be honest, respect or civility exercised in the discourse.

ahem, harumph....
