Scott, Scott, Scott,
The commercial website for ultra-sonic to audio is here Audio Spotlight - Add sound and preserve the quiet.
They don't use hundreds of watts! They get 80 dba!
.
Obviously it scales so they use 30W, 80dBA is not too loud. I was there during the development of one of these, the effect is very unsettling but the applications are limited. Two years is basicly micro-Watts from a battery the claims have no basis.
A great breakthrough in improving the quality was the addition of a bias signal to the record head. This effectively linearized the recording by adding a high frequency signal that kind of averaged the desired signal over a greater range of the magnetic imprint.
Your just guessing. From Wikip.
Magnetic tape has a nonlinear response at low signal strengths, as measured by its coercivity. Bias increases the signal quality of most audio recordings significantly by pushing the signal into the linear zone of the tape's transfer function.
and
A constantly, rapidly varying magnetic field also helps overcome magnetic hysteresis
Does air exhibit either of these properties?
If these things do work by putting out ultrasonic sound, then save yourself $2k and buy a dog whistle or one of those $5 rodent repelent boxes, or a pet bat. Why ultrasonic, just open a window and let the background noise do the job.😀
Thanks, I've spotted those already.
Other alternatives I've come up with:
Sound directions
Directed Audio, Directional Speakers, Focused Sound: Brown Innovations, Inc.
Audionation UK – Audio & Visual Systems- HSS-III Directional Audio System, now Version 2
Not sure if they're all based on the same tech - I'll need to do some more research.
Sennheiser ones failed because of their high price tag or something but I have this bad feeling that those other options won't perform as well (if we even manage to find a distributor that is).
Hope I'm wrong.

Or get one of these sound canons, that would excite the molecules in the room!
I once wrote one of those garbage generators. I taught it what Welsh looks like, and it could produce complete nonsense which looked like Welsh to an English speaker. My Welsh-speaking colleague was amused (fortunately!!).

Scott,
I have a hard time with a battery on the shelf lasting two years!
Doing the calculation a 9 volt battery can under optimum conditions deliver 3 watts over 17500 hours that would be 170 micro-watts! using a 35% efficient resonant oscillator that would be almost 87 dba!
Please check my arithmetic! (I have a hard time with that number!! 🙂 )

Is English your native language? Or do you just not understand the issues?
I think he understands them very well. What's the nonlinearity of air at 87dBa? Don't conflate ultrasonic intensity and the resulting intensity of in-band sound.

SY,
Let us be clear when we talk about non-linearity of air we are not talking about "excess absorption" which is a humidity related issue. Rather we are talking about deviations from PV=NRT. That answer would be between 20 to 40 db for an 87 dba source.
Now as to his understanding, try reading the article yourself and see what is really there.

Ed, I think the problem isn't tape bias, it's the analogy between tape bias and making sounds in air.

[snip]So let us look at the actual device claims rather than the reviews.
[snip]ES
I did:
"The H2 stimulates the oxygen's molecules in a way that improves its viscosity thus allowing it act much more effectively. The basic principle is similar to a catalyser. Technically it works with capacitively activated crystals. The air molecules inside of the listening room are jogged through the loudspeaker and thus transmit the sound information. In order to elongate the air molecules from their rest position it is necessary to spend energy first. It is much easier to move them if once moving. This phenomenon is similar to static and dynamic friction. To force a heavy piece of rock to move is not an easy task. But if it is once moving it can be much easier shifted further. The Steinmusic Harmonizer is working very similar, but rather at a level of ethereal states...."
... and your point?

It is an analogy because the effect is similar not exactly the same. But I think you understand the actual issue is that sometimes weird things can happen.
I will actually try something along these lines because it may have application in projecting sound long distances with better fidelity.
If oxygen molecules are catalyzed they are more active. That means rust of expensive audio equipment and faster aging of listeners! 😱

You can read the gobbledy gook to sort of say that is what is going on. Or you may not.
My point is that there might actually be something that is going on which is why it has positive reviews.
But you knew that.
true blood
Currently watching True Blood (HBO Vampire Series)... and allot of weird things are sometimes going on(sic)😀😉
Sookie is an effing fairy, for goodness sake... there are many many shape shifters... Russell plans to dominate all mankind... and Jason... well who knows what he's all about...
Maybe consuming the V will also improve the sound in mysterious ways... now to find a vampire to drain some blood....
and this has had many positive reviews as well!!!
sure explains Louisiana tho...

ED - SPL is sound pressure, you want energy per unit volumne to get W/cc^3. It''s so far off it's not worth trying to rationalize. The air molecules already have a mean free velocity they are not still, the rock analogy is for fools.

This business of Pre-Exciting air molecules belongs in mythology.
Popular Urban Myth:
In very cold weather turn on the headlights before trying to start the car. Turning the headlights on gets the battery "ready" to provide cranking amperage... "wakes the battery up" as it were.
Problem?
It's myth. At -35°f you need every bit of energy available for cranking... turning other stuff on wastes a precious stored reserve. That is fact.

130 dba spl @ 1 M = 1 acoustic watt. (spherical surface of course) Sorry I forgot the distance term as around here the 1 M just would have been assumed.

At room temp, air molecules are moving at about 450m/s, so I think we're safe to assume that there's no stiction (presumably against the luminiferous aether or the phlogiston).

Yes I knew that. If I shift my coffeetable 1 foot it changes the room acoustics and sometimes I can hear it.
Anybody need an acoustic cancellation coffeetable? Just $12.000 (plus shipping).
My point is that the description is there to encite me to buy it. So, I read the description and conclude that it's bogus. YMMV.
