Some pro amplifiers use LM13700 transconductance op-amps for variable input attenuation. The LM13700 is normally off. Consider getting some schematics and study how this is implemented. You can start by looking at Behringer EP2500 schematic, a well known one. Then you can study others from QSC, Yorkville, etc...

An alternative to LM13700 are light dependent resistors (LDR) and "Vactrols".

greetings there is a working limiter with pcb on solid state thread on page 8
vertex amp thread page 7 post 61 using ic LM13600 LM 13700 also can be used
qsc uses this circuit only mods are instead of 1.2k resistor 1k prest can be
used to limit voltage to 1.5 volts
