Always loved music and I am jelous of those able to play an instrument🙂 o my 'second best' is Hi-Fi! I always aspired to a decent Hi-Fi system and I now have a Quad 34 pre-amp which has been modified by Les at Avondale and a pair of Quad 405's that I have modified myself and turned into mono-blocks according to the schematics shown on Keith Snooks site - DC-Daylight. I feed them into my B&W 801s that I have fitted new drivers to. The CD player is a NAD (something or other) and my turntable is a new gloss red Pro-Ject Genie turntable.
Okay, this is not a grossly exotic setup, but it is my setup and it has taken me quite a while to get here. It sounds terrific and gives me a great deal of listening pleasure.
I have also discovered the world of headphone amps and In Ear Monitors. I have quite a few pairs of IEM's now🙂 I bought a FiiO E7 headphone amp and as I spend a lot of time travelling it has given me more opportunity to enjoy my music. My source is an iPod Gen5 30Gb with a 40Gb HDD upgrade.
No, not a million dollars worth of kit but it all works and sounds good.
My next project is a Quad 303 which I have upgraded the power supply, replaced the caps and the rectifiers and I am now looking for a pre-amp. I have an Arcam 5 as a CD source for this project but I am trying to find a pre-amp. I quite fancy the idea of a valve pre-amp and there are a few I have considered but frankly I do not know enough to make an informed decision, so prepare yourselves - dumbass questions coming your way soon. Meanwile, I would be grateful for some suggestions.

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum. Not a valve pre but check out Salas Hotrodded DCB1 buffer. If you don't need any gain from a preamp the sound quality of this little beauty will bring a smile to your face as will anything by Nelson Pass. Happy building.

Welcome to the forum.

Where are you based?

You won't need a pre-amp with much gain if you are feeding a CD player into a Quad 303.

.

I am up in the North West, just north of Manchester.
I realise it won't need much but I really don't know what to buy. I thought that a really basic Headphone amp would be a good bet. Having seen some of the cheap Chinese kits on the 'bay I figured I best get a bit of advice before I spend (waste) my hard earned

Without wanting to sound totally stupid, who is Nelson Pass? I am off to find out.
