I am curious if anyone actually built or heard the DTQWT or a TQWT? I read a few threads on here with people kicking around the idea but no reviews except a quote from the guy that made them.
I heard MJK's own TQWT that used a Fostex driver at the time (iirc) and was quite impressed with the presentation of the bass and the overall sound. Of course the total SPL and the HF is limited by the small Fostex driver, but with small ensemble pieces like jazz or chamber music it was quite nice, better than one might expect. Quite refined. Stand-up bass was rather exceptionally good as I recall.
How does that stack up against some other methods and other systems?
That depends on your personal tastes, needs and budget, also the footprint you are willing to have in ur space. The max SPL will depend on the driver and amp power.
Hope that helps in some way.

I built mine at B's suggestion and I love them, especially at low levels, where I'd lose definition on my old BR subs, these just...breathe...
Just what is a "DTQWT" or for that matter a "TQWT" ?
TQWT is Tapered quarter wave tube, or T-TQWT is taped, tapered quarter wave tube. I've seen it called Voight Pipe as well.

Oh yes, tapered instead of tapped...must be my transformer brain....
You might be correct, I have dyslexia when it comes to acronyms sometimes and I didn't check.
I'm pretty sure the OP is asking about Troels Gravesens' designs.

I can't say that I've heard Troels speakers themselves, but the design is sound and has it's merits. I'm sure Troels are every bit what he describes them to be.

Hi,
I've built Troels DTQWT, and I love them. What would you like to know?
I've tested many amplifiers with my speakers: tube, solid state, class D but I prefer Nelson Pass's amps: Zen 4, Aleph 5(planning to build F3 for my final setup).

Hello everyone, this is my first post, sorry for my english.
There are many builders returns for the DTQWT on the Troels page :
builders response
Do any one have an idea how the jenzen NEXT compare to the dtqwt ?

Hi,
A long, long time ago, I reviewed a a speaker based on the DTQWT principle, have a look here:
Thorsten Loesch: Hørning Perkles Loudspeakers

Hi,
In this case you may find my Perikles review quite to the point, as TG was apparently inspired by Tommy Hornings designs...

Disclaimer: No I haven`t heard the DTQWT but I`ll comment on it anyways 😎
For one, it seems to have a big shelf in response above 2khz... I`d imagine it sounds really warm and inviting and forgiving but not quite what I`d go for personally.
Second, the use of the waveguide with the essentially Paper seas W22 excel looks fantastic, but I suspect the crossover is too high for best fidelity out of an 8" driver.
Third, because you can`t get the waveguides separately, you have to settle for pricey Jantzen crossover components as part of a kit that hike up the cost with arguably no return.
Fourth, I`ve read that the actual enclosure wasn`t all too greatly modeled and has some unwanted response ripple.
Fifth, and you can correct me on this, but I believe this is a 2.5 way speaker rather than a 3-way. While it has its merits, I feel that the limited throw of the 8" mid will limit the dynamic range of this speaker. With no high pass filter I feel just using bigger drivers seems pointless.
I would contemplate picking up a pair of the JA-8008s from E-speakers, sending them in to the klippel folks at DIYMA, and then then mating them to some SEOS-8s + CDX-1425 + AE TD15S in a custom Tapered TL. etc

I've heard them at Troels place 😉
They are very very good.. Especially they capability to play VERY loud, without ruin the music.
I spent a few hole day's, at Troels. One of them listening to the speakers, and one of them rebuilding my half-changs.
We also for the fun tried to compare his youngson amp, uptil my fully balanced F4's. - Troels was pleased with the sound, but we needed a ~6db gain or so, from his preamp to drive them fully.
Next time i will bring my hole setup including my highgain BoSoZ.
Well that's off topic... but thoose speaker sound very wonderfull 😀
Jesper.

A very nice review. Thank you
One thing I was curious on though, is the article recommends a 2x3.5 watt tube amp but never refers to what is driving the subs. I assume he is bi amping the setup. How much power is needed for the woofers?

I wanted to know what you like about them, what you don't like about them. Possibly other kits that you wish you would have built instead of these (if any)
I plan on building the 4-12" version for the lower bass extension and also doing the tweeter mod.
Hi,
I drove the Perikles with a single 8 Watt per channel Tube Amp, so I suspect TG also just uses a single amp channel for his speakers. These systems are very efficient, around 10dB more than the "average" speaker, so 10dB (or ten times) less power will give similar levels of loudness.
