Wilson Audio Sasha Drivers?

Wilson buys where all we professional buy but he gets special versions. As far as i know his Focal tweeter is based on older technology before the beryllium version. He prefers that particular tweeter because it has a more extended response in the lower treble, upper mid.
When i look at the Sasha`s step response the tweeter starts negative and the crossover slope is rather low so he gets somewhat lower group delay then the usual LR4. I had the tweeter in my hands. It has quite a big back cavity and there is a cloth string that gets from the front cavity to the back cavity. I assume Wilson modifies the tweeters in house.

That's what Mr. Wilson and his Ferrari dealer need you to believe.

wrong. I have compared wilson audio drivers- woofers, midranges tweeters. I also have all stock versions to compare. they are DIFERENT. they also sound DIFERENT and MEASURES diferent.

in particulary midrange driver- it have much shorter voice coil, less inductance and less nominal excursion, frequency response is diferent, and its actualy not based on this driver at all. older watt puppy midrange was bassed on scan speak 4545 driver but also voice coil is MUCH diferent. wilson maxx 2 midranges based on 18w8535 but have diferent VC former and magnet from revelator series. they measures and sound VERY diferent than 18w8535 as well. puppy woofers is based on scan speak 21w base but its cone is custom MSP, its voice coil is 4layers instead 2,even magnetic gap is diferent . the only real "stock" thing is basket.
anyone who claims that "its just thay want to think this" needs apologize.. I am not wilson advocate, but I know this manufacturer technical development quite good and respect its intelectual property as well.

Yes I know Wilson does driver development/modification based on various manufacturers standard units with considerable effort and expertise. He still has a Ferrari dealer too so not everything goes into R & D. Some of it goes into R & T ( Road and Track).

wrong again. today Dave does very litle on basic development, just fundamental arrow to R&D team and soem listening tests and product final aproovement to serial production. so probably most of the time he is free to its off-job activities. including yours mentioned car driving.

I had a pair of Sophia series 1's. After years of diy and working with off the shelf drivers, I am not impressed. I have built stuff that sounds quite a bit better. I wonder if they cripple the lower end speakers to justify spending another 10K on the model up. I have worked with the stock Focal 120 TD5 and I personally would have preferred it over the Wilson unit. I have worked with the 4531 and really like it. Not sure if there's anything different about the Wilson unit here, but I have had better results with the stock driver. Their 10" woofer on the Sophia was a modified version of an old Vifa driver that was later relabeled Scan Speak. It was inexpensive which is why I assume they use it. The Scan Speak 10" Revelator aluminum 4 ohm was a much better driver. Hell, some of the cheap Dayton reference HF subwoofers will get better performance when used correctly. X material is phenolic resin grade X. M, after much marketing, appears to be some tight grained particle board. I have pics if I could figure out how to post them.

Oh and I have a friend who refinishes truck trailers. They use the same setup as Wilson's "gel coat" In my friends case it's a polyurea coating. Boat gel coat won't cure exposed to air. It's made to cure in the mold. You can't use actual gel coat in an external spray on application. After that add your paint system of choice.

Why not ? He changed the world of High End Audio, if you like it or not.

Hi Joachim,

I'm sorry but I am ignorant of this. I know it's one of the most successful high end manufacturers, at least going by all the reviews and ads. I'm not rich enough to know anyone who has actually bought them. :)

But when you say he changed the world of high end, this is some history I do not know about. Did he change the industry, besides being successful? I'm not trying to be a jerk or beat up on Wilson's. I just don't know about this part of audio history and it sounds interesting.

Thanks,

Erik

He managed to convince people to disgorge large sums of money for ugly and mediocre sounding product, and in the process launched all "high end" speakers on a hyperinflationary price trend. So yes, he changed the industry. Similarly to, if not as egregiously as, scumbag conmen Lee, Kimber, Cardas, etc changed the industry because at least Wilson's stuff sounds different.

M material LOL

So this is M material. I'm assuming this is trademarked and not patented.;)

I think DIYers can be pretty much happy with the fact that we
don't have to unload a ton of money to get a high-end product
into our home, although it's not exactly cheap either to make one.

The fact is, manufacturers simply have to modify a speaker unit
so buyers can be at peace they are getting a uniquely designed product
not available to everyone else as an off the shelf unit. We know that
modifications are just a decoy, although their existence can't be denied.
