ESL panel length

If one were to build new Acoustat-style panels for one of the full height models (1+1, 2+2, Model 6, etc.), instead of building two panels to reach the full height, could you make (assuming the cube louvers could even be sourced) 8' panels and make a single panel for each speaker in - for example - a 1+1? Would there a real difference, performance-wise, between two 4'x9" stacked vs one 8'x9" panel?

In my estimation no absolutly zero difference other than it would be much more of a fuss to make. I have to build a set of 0ne plus 0ne size panels some time soon and I am considering horizontal sections rather than vertical ones simply to ease construction. Smaller sections will require a smaller jig to build them on. Diaphragm stretching will also be less of a fuss for the same reason. YMMV but that`s my take on it. Best regards Moray James.

Hi,

That's the way I'm making my ESL's for years. Horizontal is simple and works well.

Cheers,

Thanks for the input, fellas. It was more of a hypothetical, but was just curious. I do think if it were done this way there wouldn't be the gap between panels, which can affect response when the ears are at that same level. But even if 8' louvers could be had, the build would be more difficult.

hella: tell me can you really notice the gap between your current Acoustat panels? For one its above your ears at seated position and below your ears when standing. You can do exactly the same trick with horizontal panels. I always found that when I was at the optimum distance from my 0ne plus 0ne`s (which was about 12 - 14 feet) the panel sounded seemless anyway. Perhaps closer you might notice if you had your ear at the exact position between the two panels but when is that going to happen? Just my thoughts YMMV as always. Best regards Moray James.

I do find a little discontinuity at the panel juncture, a bit of a change in the HF response if I use a taller chair that puts my ears closer to the transition point. I do sit a little closer to the speakers than your setup, due to room size, so that probably makes it a little more noticeable. Not a big deal at all, and only under certain circumstances, but always looking for ways to get closer to perfection. 😀

Hella: there is no good reason not to build up a full length set of panels if that is what you want. You can solvent weld two sections of panels to achieve the lenght that you want. The Quad 63 is a good example of stacked horizontal sections and I have never heard of one complaint along these lines but if full lengtht works for you go for it, you will gain a little panel area so nothing wrong with that.
Hey allen if I am not mistaken Hella has bumped his high voltage supply already, Hella please correct me if I am mistaken. Allen great to hear from you buddy how`s it hangn in the key state? What`s in the system right now? What`s waiting to hit the floor next? Best regards Moray James.

Thanks, Moray. Yeah, more being curious than actually looking to go in that direction. You're right, I did bump the voltage on my interfaces, but I've gone to Acoustat Servo amps since then, and prefer them. The interface mods were definitely worth doing, however, and I still have them in case of Servo problems.

Moray
Well you know me i see all this talk of Acoustats an i go an pull out 6panels an setup some 3s,an put just the high fr. tranfourmers an set up my SE drive so to day in tampabay the temp, 50.coool, so i can get all The ESL have got an it a trip after all these MartinLogan,ESL hell or heven you no.
What about you got that baby marrided Hope all is well ...
Are you still geting the Klipsch too rock.. i now you are good to hear from you..hope it not too cool up in the great white North..

All i can say about the ESL bias is set it up like SoundLab so you can go from 4k-7k thin just dial in what you need.. life saver..Dr West got it right..

hey Allen: yes my baby girl got married to a wonderful guy in August in Nova Scotia. Flew down for ten day and had excellent weather and a fantastic time. They sure grow fast. My daughter is now finishing off here degree at the university in Fredricton in New Brunswick.
Weather here in Calgary has been excellent this fall and is still very nice durring the day with a little frost over night but still flowers which is astounding for Calgary this time of year.
Perhaps you could post a schematic of your set up for those here who might be interested in testing it out? Best regards. Moray James.

SE tranfourmers set up for any ESL

It was Jim Powers that gave us this. Now i have Acoustats 3s set up with just the one T2 driving all 3- 9"by44"panels,the back side of the panel is the one on the neg. Here the two transfourms are setup for the tone Network to be added to the ML panel but this well work with one transfourmer an well give 3db more output than the pushpull with the center tap grounded.I have used this set up with SoundLabs an Janzen ESLs .Looks funny but works great.
