Sounds like the wiper isn't making good contact. Clarostats are generally good quality, maybe it suffered shipping damage. Hopefully Nebraska Surplus will replace it quickly.

I heard back from Surplus Sales and they deny that there is a problem with the pot. Saying "It was good when it left here" and "If you return it and it has not been burned up we will replace it"
Each person handles this in their own way but for me this signals that there will be a problem. I never said anything about it being burned up and referred the writer to this thread. I did not hear back.
I contacted my credit card company. They took a look at the charge and immediately issued a full credit with out any investigation. It was almost as if they had dealt with this bunch before. I received the confirming letter from the credit card company today. I did send the pot back.
It will be interesting to see what their response is.
I will not buy from them again. It's up to you if you do.

As if they individually test each pot before they ship it...what a load....
Greg- this info is a bit late for me! 😱 😀
Supposedly I have a box of pots on their way from those folks. I'll let you know if and when they arrive....
I got a pot from another place and got it all assembled last night. It works perfectly. I can use the "Tape Out" from the preamp to record to my computer now, without over driving it.
If I never have to change the setting to adjust for different record volume levels, I might just measure the pot resistance and substitute some fixed resistors and use the box on my DVD player output next.

Hi Greg, glad to hear you got it working. Did you get the issue resolved with Nebraska Surplus? And yeah, using a fixed resistor voltage divider here makes sense, dual pots usually don't track resistance evenly between one side and the other which can cause channel imbalance, and they are slightly noisier than resistors.

Glad you finally have success! Definitely tell us what resistor values you end up with.
As a final test you might make a CD with sinewaves at maximum unclipped level and use that to set your pot level. If you have problems with that contact me off list and I can make up some files for you using Adobe Audition.
Thanks

I apologize for not having read the whole thread, but why not use the digital input? Why go through 2 more unnecessary digital/analog conversions? Not to mention possible ground loops when you interconnect computers and video gear.
Set the player to downmix to PCM stereo if necessary. Audacity should be able to do bit-perfect captures from an S/PDIF input.

I have no digital outs on my preamp. It's an old NAD 1700
I am using a M-Audio 2496 card in my computer and my DVD player does not have the same type of digital out as the card does.

Then why not an optical to coax converter? DIYable for about $5 in parts, or less than $20 on eBay, shipping included.
I'm tempted to suggest getting a Bu-ray drive for the computer, so you could just rip and demux. Under $100 now (and that's for a writer, not just BDROM), which is not much if you express that figure in terms of tanks of gasoline.

Pots arrived today - all in original (Mallory) boxes. I checked a couple and they seem OK.
Shipping was a few dollars over the postage charge; paperwork was properly done.
So, I'd probably deal with the company again.

Mine was not in a box. It was wrapped in bubble wrap.
Actually, bubble wrap would have been better. The pots weren't a very tight fit in the boxes. (The group of boxes was well wrapped in bubble plastic, and in a good (new) box.)Mine was not in a box. It was wrapped in bubble wrap.
Pots from Mouser and Digikey always come to me in a plastic bag with bubble or paper packing. So far, so good.
