New FRX OB driver from Decware

Guys,
I requested return with full refund and Steve accepted it. But for last couple of days I kept going back and listened to the recordings he has posted on his web. I really liked what I was listening. The drivers sitting on speaker boxes without baffle have show indication of similar sound. So I have decided to try it out in ZOB before returning. Steve has assured that it will have same quality. If it is similar, I will keep it. This weekend I am working on ZOB and will let you how it goes.

Adason,
The FR I measured was first measurement of my life. It was posted as is. It might be a coincidence.

It seems to me that the new FR is still pretty flat, if not so 'impossibly flat' as the first one. But from what I understand, the biggest problem this speaker is going to face is bass production on OB. Wouldn't it make more sense to do the typical full range + helper woofer? Correct me if I'm wrong, but that should improve power handling since the 8" driver won't be at risk of over-excursion.

I think that is one of the best ways to go about this diy speaker building hobby etc.. Get the fullrange driver of your choice where you want it sound wise, then cue in some bass from a helper woofer and get that where you want it, then if needed depending on fullrange driver choice and size, cue in some highs and get that where you want it, and bingo!😀 Well at least one can try for a bingo:spin:

Guys, sorry about the delayed feedback. I made the ZOB and FRXs are mounted on them. Let me provide you the most honest feedback. The drivers are good. If you are expecting the quality of the sound similar to what Steve has posted on his web, you may get disappointed. To achieve that level of sound you need all the gears he is using. If you have that hi-fi system, go ahead. If not think twice before spending money. Also if you are making ZOB just expect that you may not get much technical support. I do not have calibrate SPL meter but the 94 db claim from Steve, take with a grain of salt. Aside from these, drivers have great high frequency performance and midrange is not shouty at all, bass is not close to what the recordings indicate. Drivers are good but not sure if it could be worth $1200.

I am in process of making OTL tube amp. This amp would test true potential of these drivers. Will provide you feedback after few weeks.

So after 23 pages what we have is a fairly interesting concept that will only reliably sound & measures well if you have the designers cd player, TT, amp, cables, cabinets, listening room and measuring equipment?

If I can but that for $1200 I'll take a pair.

If not :joker:

Hi Creek,

Sorry to hear that the drivers are what were published originally.

Just wondering what your thoughts on the OB cabinet design are?
Was it hard to make? Does the resonance chamber seem to work at all?
I'm intrigued to try it out, but don't want to waste too much time and money.

Cheers

Matt

Well, if zenmaster Steve can't explain what he intends them to do, I doubt anyone can

Audiophile Tube Amps and Tube Gear from DECWARE

see the "how they work" series down the page

"inspired by some of Telsa's work" - would that be Niklas, or Elon Musk's car company? I'm confused 😀

Steve is an interesting guy - makes great sounding amps, and I've heard / built a couple of his speakers, but these I'm having trouble wrapping my head around.
