Monacor compression drivers. 160hz-7000hz!!!?

I apreciate your input very much Helmuth. Most probably i will be better off with a standard solution instead of trying to use the monacor driver down to 200Hz. But i am to young yet to listen to others opinions without experimenting so i will probably give this driver a try( i can spare 40-50 euros in the name of....ears).
One driver, one horn ....if i like the results i will go and buy the other one..
If i don't like it...well...i will then have a very big portavoice 🙂).

What type of horn would you try with this driver? (something that i can build)

Download this exel spreadsheet.
http://www.volvotreter.de/downloads/Tractrix_v1.4b.zip

choose a round or rectangular horn and fill in the surface you start with often is it 1 inch or 1.5 or 2 inch . The cut of frequency will dominate the mouth surface with a cut off of 200hz it will become huge.

And you will have the contour where you can build you horn with.

Take a look at this site. Nice diy projects.

It's not to hard to use the trumpet as a mould.

right now what i want to cut the profile from plywood and use that as a template to make a mould. i need to build a big rotating table for that.

Bdw: Nice system.
Maybe we could organize a meeting this autumn. Local meeting so we can hear, not only see out gear.

Really bad idea to use Volvotreters design! No good with flat top and bottom. Use Hornresp templates for any shape you want. Go for a square 150 Hz to make it work from 200Hz.

Can´t understand why this should be considered "huge"!

It will be 65*65cm and 111cm long as I told you before. Shouldn´t be to hard to build. It could be a good to cut the last 30cm and build a separate square to round 1" adapter. If you cut this much it will also be possible to build a square to round 2" adapter.

Also why should the Monacor be a bad driver? Jean-Michel LeCleach says it´s very good from 200Hz to 1,2kHz. So why not try 200Hz-2kHz as DorinD says. But not with the Monacor trumpet.

Remember the original commercial Tractrix where square!

I just remembered there is a another great low-budget midbass-driver: Faital M5N12-80(Made in Italy). Price is well below 100EUR. This is what JLH says when using it in a 140Hz Tractrix:

I did not use an adapter, just bolted the Faital directly to the 4" throat. This makes for about a 1:1 throat. The sound was very smooth and coherent without any sign of congestion. The Faital is one of the few woofers that can get away with a 1:1 throat and still maintain decent high frequency gain.

He also said it will be useful down to 135Hz.

An additional bonus is that the horn will get a lot shorter! It might even work with a square throat.

Jack,
The 200T would be great. With the Monacor I believe it will be useful even lower than 350Hz. Worth a try anyway.

Rvrazvan,
I have the 200T(50cm radius) myself and they are great and extremely, extremely priceworthy. Buy them if you can afford them.

If a lowbudget system is your goal and what you want, go for a Tractrix 130-150Hz. No problem with Hornresp, I can help you with the templates.

If you add an adapter to Auto-Techs 8" horn, reducing it to 4", you will get close to the same result with the Faital. Although it will not go that low.

This is a template for a 135Hz Tractrix.

Hey Jack,
Checked your site for the 200 and noticed that you can also get it with 125mm throat dia. Is it a separate adapter for 8 to 5 inch? The 5" is a little to large for the Faital being ca 120cm2. The Faital needs in the ballpark of 80cm2 corresponding to ca 100mm dia.

This is a sim with Faital in a 135Hz Tractrix horn. Note Faitals TS parameters are wrong. I have got the correct ones from them. HF will be a lot bettter as direct radiation isn´t shown.
