Anyone make a 16-bit R2R chip or kit?

Hi, Sorry all current production audio dacs are sigma delta or bitstream, even
for PC usb use.I think you still can get TDA 1541A,PCM63,PCM1702 or even the more recent PCM1704 24bit.There are chinese boards if you do a search.

Do you literally want an R2R based DAC or do you mean a 'old fashioned' binary weighted DAC as opposed to a sigma-delta based DAC? The monolithic IC parts so far mentioned aren't actually R2R as that approach has limited usefulness in practice owing to infinitesmal output compliance.

AKM 4396?

I' m not sure about this one, but I read somewhere that the AKM 4396 and later 4399 DACs are similar to the "ring dac" concept and uses R2R.

If this is the case, an inexpensive and fun way to play with that would be to start with a Behringer DEQ 2496, take out the AKM 4393 that is in there and drop in the '96. Then you can take the outputs of the '96 directly into a 1:1 transformer, or coupling caps on both signal legs (A+ and A- on the AKM pinouts) or whatever buffer amp you choose.

I've done the direct out with the 4393, sounds great. Other members (Sendler is one of them), have done the 93 to 96 conversion and report fantastic results.

In essence, you could simply use the Behringer as your DAC... just make sure you go digital input and direct DAC out, making sure you bypass the Behringer's analog circuitry which is not particularly good sounding. Also, when going DAC direct out, it is less important to mod the PS on the Behringer because you are only using the 6V and 3.3V sections which are fairly decent.

So's if it's R2R, that might be a good thing for you to check out.
