Just finished this rack - ala Salamander. The shelves are 3/4" mdf laminated to 1 1/2" with purpleheart veneer(www.oakwoodveneer.com). Purpleheart wood turns purple naturally when cut- no stain necessary. The 3'x 3/4" threaded rods , nuts and washers and couplings and mdf board are from Home Depot. The couplings at the bottom are for level adjustment.
This rack came out extremely stable (86 lbs.)

No offense, but won't those shelves warp under the weight of even a light cdp? I mean, 2.25", might as well use cardboard, right?

Mdf that thick (or 1.5" in OP) will warp supporting a few Lbs?

Tom Waits ;-)Kevin(ahcc20)...I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy!
Excellent! I like it!
I recently was looking for a comercial "rack" that would look simular to the one you made.
However, I could not find anything I liked except for a unit by "Sauder" (#410270) which I purchased.

How is it going to warp when all forces are occurring at the corners?
You people are far too serious. As pointed out above, I was having a little fun- rack looks great and it won't warp.
Late chiming in here (I'm getting ideas for a new rack of my own now).
BUT< I wanted to point out that the Purple Heart must be sealed with a UV stable clear coat or the beautiful purple color will fade to brown.
I have done a lot of work with PH (great stuff b the way) in my guitar making and it can be quite vibrant freshly cut but does oxidize.
Hope it is still looking as good as it did new!
