I break them into many pieces, and beyond that worry not too much. I am much more concerned about hard drives and I drill lots of holes in the platters..
Well, if a green felt tip marker improves playback, maybe all you need is a red or blue one...
😉

If conductive, probably a tripped circuit breaker.
True, but if using a 30 or 50A breaker, would the current be enough to destroy the data?

And there I was thinking you just wanted to see a CD explode😀

Me too!

Breaking them into a few pieces is going to be more than enough to prevent any "normal" person from reading them with over the counter equipment.
I'm sure the NSA could find a way to read the pieces and extract at least some of the information if they had to though 🙂

Yes, it all depends on how hard someone wants to try. A fold or two will stop all but the most determined and skilled. Unless there are state secrets or some treasure involved, no one is going to the trouble for typical backups.
When you break them, the coating usually peels off anyway.

A blender will certainly work....

The blending starts at 50 seconds in.

It says "Don't try this at home"
Is that like a sticker on a vintage amp that says
"No user serviceable parts inside" 😀

Who, me? 🙄
If we want to talk blenders...

glue a cherry bomb to it and send it flying, just make sure you don't have your dog with you if the fuse is long...
I dont think I saw anyone recommend a belt sander. Preferably a 80 grit or something really abrasive. I would probably just use a panhead screw to secure it to some wood, to keep it from launching.
I vote blendomatic though.

I don't think it was ever stated just how sensitve this data was, but three I wouldn't underestimate are Big Brother, industrial spies, and identity thieves.
If you make a small cut on the back side, you can remove the entire reflective layer with tape, leaving a (mostly) clear disc. Leaving this in the sun or breaking/cutting/shredding it will surely stop anyone from getting your data.
If a CD/RW, you can probably DBAN it.
