Don't put too much stock in that analysis, it told me that I wrote like Arthur C. Clarke. 😀
I put in a few lovecraft paragraphs and it identified it, also a few david foster wallace and they were correctly identified. I put in some of my writing and first told me I write like David Foster Wallace....then many others after trying other pieces...it was good for a laugh, anyway 😉
Hi John
If you are thinking about another forum, I can recomend Andy's site.
🙂
I think Glen would veto that, if he has a say.
Me too. Oh, and Chuck Palahniuk, Stephen King, James Joyce, Cory Doctorow , David Foster Wallace and Dan Brown.
Thanks, That explains a lot...we just need to know who we're responding to on a day-to-day basis...😀

Ahh..The dreaded blind links to files... What's there? Perhaps the keys to the truth of life, the universe and everything? As they say, you can't win if you don't play. I choose not to take the risk.
Mr McAfee lit up red as Santa's cap at the sight of that link...careful!
Mr. mcAfee is a bloated POS. The links are quite innocent . http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/8/24/2063601/My%20Documents/HiFiNewsPF-Dec73-p2585-1000.jpg
Just a standard url linking to a image .... 7 years with no Symantec or McAfee BS. Get server 2K8 or W7lite + chrome. I am absolutely immune to browsing hijacks , are you? Go to the pirate bay with your IE-XXX and click those huge "download" buttons. 😀😀
PS. Cool floyd material .. added to the "collection". 🙂

Same here. 20 years or so with no anti-virus. No problems. Online since 1985, on the net since 1993.
I do not use I.E., MSN, Outlook or any of that virus magnet stuff. And I have a brain - small as it is - I use it.

If there were one that really worked, I'd use it.
I find malware form time to time and clean it off. Never had any go active on me. Knock on wood.
I do like Winpatrol for keeping "know it all" software from messing with things. It helps a lot.

Back in 2005 is when you could just get infected with something you downloaded or an attachment to your email. Yahoo and others DID NOT have auto scanning , so you had to have your own AV. By 2006 the "social engineers" (hackers) exploited flash/java and other weaknesses in the browser. The fancy AV that you spent $$$ on did nothing to stop this or anything you were tricked into downloading or installing.
A few simple rules:
Never DL a special viewer /program to access someones proprietary content. If they can't standardize, (.ZIP , PDF , TXT ) find similar content elsewhere. Same goes for multimedia (.AVI -divx,MPEG,MP3,FLAC).
Watch out for shyttie toolbars, plugins and other B$ that otherwise legit programs try to install along the way (winamp , DIVX).
After 2006 , IE became the main target for "drive-by" infections. Don't use it.
FF or Chrome are safer/faster. IE has been TOTALLY removed from my W7. 😀
As you said , Pano ... don't use the programs that the masses use. Attacks are directed towards the windows media player/flash/adobe reader /IE-xxx crowd. The only other thing to worry about is a direct attack (someone gaining admin. privileges). See how you "look" to the internet ..... https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
(not a virus 😀 )
(below 1) is a good response to this test... (not even the mongrel port 80 shows up!)
You would not believe how many open ports there are around !

Good one. But I'm even super cautious about sites like that!
There seem to be so many now that want to scan my computer. Uh, no thanks.
It just takes some common sense, is all. What really amuses me is all the "computer whiz" youth that walk right into all the worst junk. Want viruses, trojans, spyware, malware, etc? Just let a teenager on your computer for a few hours.

My trojans are in the night table - ever ready.

Ahhhh ! Those are more "social engineering" masterpieces. Get the user worried that they are infected and offer them a free scan. The DIFFERENCE , is that most want you to install an Active X/java control , essentially "hijacking" you under the pretense of scanning for something.
The GRC scanner (link above) is server based , installs nothing , scans no files. All it does is "make believe" it is a hacker with a port scanner looking for open ports. I could scan my whole local Comcast "block" (.tn.comcast.net) just like the GRC site to find all the "holes". I could scan you or anyone with a IP , google scans all ports 80's on the whole planet to index the world. There is scanning from the "inside" and scanning from the "outside" ... big difference !!!
ALL those driver update sites , most free virus scan sites , and sites that promise to "make your PC faster/fix registry problems" are total shams that both install spyware and do not have your best interests in mind. NOTHING IS FREE (except my OS's 😀) Even the better "free" programs install toolbars/spyware so you really do pay for the "free". 🙁

I took the risk and ran every test.

Thank you firewall and router. There are several computers on this network.

In terms of the wilds of the internet my life has been made much simpler by just running Linux, some other areas not so much, but that is changing day by day. (Wine, Dosbox, and a windows xp virtual environment in Virtualbox take care of those things I can't quite get natively in Linux yet) I'll never go back.. 😀

XP or win 7 firewall ??
My XP firewall would not mask my port 80 , I am quite impressed with the win 7 one. Better than "zonealarm" , but with almost no overhead.
Even as I "bump heads" with moderation on occasion , I would never throw up a bad link or offer a virus. A bad reputation is nearly impossible to rectify.
DEEP in my "collection" , there is a .ZIP file with 4700 virus codes. This is purely educational , clearly labeled ,and highly quarantined. You can have viruses on a PC when they are on "ice".

With a local network you have to worry about "cross infection" (the kids download spyware/virii) ... it tries to call home or install on othe networked PC's) The normal router-based home network is known to hackers (192.168.0.1-256). Spyware can communicate freely. Countering the "social norm" , I use a fixed (10.0.0.1-256) network and all the surfing is done with a proxy on port XXXX (some high number 😀😀 ) . My kids spyware can't call anywhere. I CAN see it (the spyware) trying and being refused.
Worst case , they (the kids) have a custom restore image and can be happily downloading viruses and spyware in a minute flat.
