Bofu no longer available

My wife tried to surprise me with a set of Bofu speakers from Parts Express for Christmas. She said they showed available on their website when she ordered them. Then they sent her an email saying it is no longer available. The website has now been changed to discontinued.

Any one tried the GRS clones yet. Guess have go back to the drawing board.

Perfection? Change it!

Eventually, for every good and simple thing, the Good Idea Police eventually find out.

"'Ere 'ere 'ere stop that! Look your product is entirely too good. I'm afraid that if you want to continue you're either going to have to make your product less good, or you're going to have to add some useless garbage to it to bring down the average quality of it. Which'll it be then?"

Sounds like I'm joking, doesn't it? 🙁

do you have a rough price? also would you be able to supply a couple of the small dayton tweeter that work well in the g chang cabs? would be helpful for me to only have to pay one lot of shipping

cheers Ben

I noticed that the Pioneer paper tweeters are missing from the PE catalog as well.
I wonder if the similar Pioneer paper midranges will follow along?
What a shame. Anyway, looking forward to results with the GRS 8FR.

Just because it's not in the catalog, does not mean it's NLA. PE only has sooo many pages to display newer products every year in the catalog, and sometimes things are still for sale even if they don't make it onto one of the pages presented. I'd check the website to be certain.

I pulled 1.3 cubic foot sealed boxes I used with the B20 from storage last night and dusted them off.

Pioneer B20 (BOFU) full range driver plus piezo tweeter

If it wasn't raining last night and today i would have brought them into the office and hooked up the GRS drivers... right now their in a temporary crappy cardboard box. The driver sounds 'full range' to me in their current setup but the bass is very poor in cardboard boxes lol... maybe before weeks end i will have them setup in decent boxes. I will run the wire from my new (and very cool) Dayton DTA 100a t-amp and let you know how it sounds.

GRS full ranger in sealed cabinet: I would say from memory that the GRS is brighter sounding. Jack Johnson playing at a moderate level right now... vocals more 'airy' than i remember with the B20 (which was veiled). Sometimes vocals sound uneven. Not much depth to the sound. I have a piezo on the back (i think it's a 1.5uf cap and 20ohm resistor... i will check later) and i can easily dial in the piezo to meet the extended range of the GRS. Maybe i sense a bit of a tinny sound on Aimee Mann. Bass is lighter than B20... Overall it plays music well enough and without the sibilance or closed in sound of typical two ways. I like them just fine but think they are a bit thin sounding in the current cabinet. I think they are weaker in the bass and stronger thru the upper mids than B20 (if that helps).

My overall view of them at the moment is that they are bass light in the 1.3 cubic foot sealed box. They have an uneven but mostly forward sounding midrange and are a bit thin sounding. Perhaps a more creative cabinet like a back horn of sorts will bring up the bass and even things out. It's extended in the treble but requires help in the bass... I'm curious about how the frequency response looks? Don't buy them if you plan on using in a simple, small sealed box on their own... Helper woofers needed!

Here you go. It certainly sounds less robust... the GRS does not have the same balls as the B20 but at this point i think we need to evaluate it on its own merits since the other driver was discontinued... The GRS is an 'ok' driver. I've been listening to it all day in good sealed boxes. It's -3 at 70hz according to the sim... the B20 was -3 at 60hz so we lose an octave. It sounds like it's missing its bottom. I will have to model a BIB. In a ported box it also shows a weaker bass response so this really is not a 'direct' replacement as claimed. It sounds a bit strained at higher volume too. But it sounds nice in an intimate setup and the mids are clear and strong. It's musical thru the mids but nowhere else lol... it sounds like a budget driver to me and should be considered as such. If i was blindfolded i'd guess it was a 5" driver.

Perhaps a bit of an aggressive sound. Unless it warms up i doubt i will pursue this driver much. But that doesn't mean others should not give it a try. It's an extended range driver that sounds a bit thin to me and has an uneven upper midrange and treble... to my ears anyway.
