I haven't changed or touched anything in my hifi system for a number of months now. I was happy with the sound. I could listen to music at any time on any day, and there was a consistency in the sound quality. But since a few days ago, I feel that there has been a change. The bass isn't as tight (hence timing), I feel that the image depth has been reduced and overall there is less clarity. It may be too early to judge but I am specifically concerned that the capacitors in my AKSA amplifier power supply have 'worn out'. I've only had the amp just over a year. Anyway this could be totally wrong I am just guessing.

Something could have changed. But probably not the caps.
Power? Room temp? Other stuff running? Different sources? Are you on medication or have plugged sinuses? (I'm serious).

Yes the sinuses does play a part. Or perhaps its more my eardrums. Sometimes I dont feel that they are balanced properly. There isnt much i can do though, it varies day to day. Oh And I have hyperacusis. I am worried if and when the sound will change back.
The other thing i did do a couple of times is that i played the Densen demagic disc at normal volume. It sounds very high pitched and is a broad spectrum signal.
Contacts deteriorate over time whether you think so or not. Pull all the cables out and reconnect them. Costs you nothing.

Connecting the dots. ESR of the power supply capacitors has an impact on the in circuit time constant. The supply of electrons may be restricted. The tongue may be a little in the cheek.
Do those power supply capacitors have mechanical or screw type connections? If they do tweak them a little (do not let them bite you) or snug the connections a little.
There is a teaching hospital campus down the road that I sometimes call on. They have an ongoing preventive maintenance program of infrared imaging the lugged connections in the large gear. It is not uncommon to see increased heat at lugs that look to be tight.

I did unplug all the cables and plugged them back in after cleaning but there is still no change.
Can the cd transport cause such a deterioration in sound quality? It's especially the bass and dynamics, they have disappeared. My transport is several years old, could a laser which is losing its power and focus cause it?

I went through a period before where the bass and dyanmics disappeared. Its difficult to say when and how the problem was resolved because i made many different changes since then. But this time I haven't touched anything and it is happening again. Please help me find the cause. It cant be anything major since everything works ok. Its a subtle but significant change in sound. The change in bass is not so subtle. This is all subjective of course,
Well - all things do age - and start to show it. I'm assuming that you have cleaned the laser pick-up on the CD - but yes they do age out as well as the detector. It could also have something to do with the electronics of the CD or preamp. Do you have another known reliable source that you can plug into the preamp and see how things sound?
Daft question this, but have you reconnected one of your speakers with the wrong polarity? This will kill bass, and drastically smear out the stero image. You might think this would be obvious, but a close relative of mine with a decent system who often listens to music did this once. He realised that something was not quite right, but it was only when I visited a few weeks later and heard it for myself that I spotted the problem.
It will kill the bass but what i am hearing is not as drastic as that. And the image is solid although as i mentioned earlier I also seem to hear less depth.
