True WAF speakers

That is it they moan as long they see something that looks like a loudspeaker.

So I solved the problem by designing a loudspeaker as big as a closet. Then two females think a nice a new closet and when they ask (say yes!).

A student came by my office today with an interesting question.
I teach industrial design by the way. He wanted to build a 2-3000$ speaker set for high WAF. The project was about crossing gender borders in product design.
I googled a lot of designer speakers with my Good Wife this evening, she´s an interior designer and knows these things. She found a lot of cool high-design speakers she liked but most of them look like they have really crappy sound.

So the question I put to you all is how do we design a really good sounding speaker that is not a rectangular wooden box. Something that looks as cool as it sounds? For a Woman?

All proposals have to be validated by the women in our lives.
Anyone up for the challenge?
How would these do?

OK, so the first thing the guy needs is a decent sub. Lets make that a bass horn and stick it under the couch. Something along these lines would work: Bigger Is Better 'BIB' Cabinet Dimensions - ZillaSpeak.com
You could make it an infinite baffle, but not everybody has the chance to rebuild their walls, specially it they are of concrete, and there is a neighbor behind them.
You would have to take an interest in buying a big, loong couch and , then you don't have to fold the BiB.
Point out the effect of filling the space under the couch so you don't have dust accumulating under there.

Second thing is something that doesn´t show the speakers, and doesn't look like speakers. That´s tougher.
A nice cylindrical floor to ceiling line source maybe?
Or Mangepans, covered in a pleasing color. I have had success with natural silk.

I thing the idea here is to break with conventional speaker shape, and make something neutral.

My main system, my fullrange OBs, and - my absolute favourite - Volvotreter's horns. Rather MAF than WAF speakers, but all no simple boxes.

I could easily imagine something resembling these Mirage Speakers mounted flat to the wall (maybe upside down) and combined with an up- or downlight.

Should be easy to hide the drivers behind some mesh/cloth.

They should make excellent sound, and have aesthetic appeal. I just like understating things. 🙂

So whats excellent? - work very well with all kinds of music, flat response, full range, good sound stage and all the other adjectives.

Practically,none... eh?
There is nothing,so far, that meets all those criteria.. so we have to wait,or improvise!!! 😎

Agreed!
And in this thread I´m inviting people to explore the dilemma of a guy who wants a good system versus a missus who wants a nice livingroom. Is there a graceful compromise ?

My wife and I compromised by keeping the stereo out of the living room.

I have a dedicated room right off the living room that is large enough for a good sounding system. While I understand that not everyone can make this compromise, I remember when we were first looking at the house the real estate agent confided in us that prospective buyers he had shown the house to didn't know what to do with the "second" living room. Right then and there I "called dibs" on the room for my sound system. There was never any further discussion about it...

Guess i'm lucky. I can put almost anything in my living room. My partner Chris has a much harder time.

If you've got woofers hidden away already... and small is the key to WAF, these compromise little in terms of fidelity (dynamics limited by cone size, as well as ultimate loudness).

I'm a big fan of the speaker as a sculpture. The original Frugel-horn achieved this, The Frugel-Horn -- Builder's Gallery, and the FH Mk3 looks to have even more potential.

Lucky chap.

My compromise,a thirty year old, goes like this:
From seven o'clock,up to four in the afternoon,my wife does whatever she wants. From seven up to twelve midnight,I do what she says...😉
Seriously though,my wife, knew all along my nutty state of audio madness, since day one.She simply accepted even,my previous two meter high eighty centimeters width, open line arrays, without blinking an eye.WAF for me is heaven on earth!!!😎

My wife wants it all to look like furniture... In that repsect, big is OK with her.

Right now, I'm in the process of converting an old Silvertone console speaker cabinet into a TV speaker with built-in preamp/amp for our office. It will serve double duty as a baby test bench.

It certainly will not be excellent, but you get the idea.

Our compromise looks like this .I said " Honey , I know that you love me so much that I can put any speaker I want in the living room. BUT You know that I love you enough so I won't put anything , which you find unacceptable 😉
