It could make this better, but most probably it could make things worse. If it's not exactly in the center, it will increase off-axis movements. Furthermore, the top disc clamp will never land exactly in the same spot when loading a disc. It's magnetic, and it provides just enough clamping force for a disc to stay put. If you increase the weight, the clamping may be a little better. It can also stop a worn discmotor from whining, temporarily that is...

I missed that one too! Hot poo...ok that's do-able, except how to avoid the same problem of it being off-center? By filling it to the brim and then cutting off the excess? any chance of posting a picture of how this looks? I guess this means you have to remove the clamp...if so I think I better not. Too much work undoing and removing the whole mechanism.
Might be 😀
(actually it's quite an old pic, my cd player is an Arcam now, and my "rack" is different hehe)

We're talking at cross purposes Simon! I mean the centering puck thing that you have a spiral on. The rest is all damped with bitumin stuff. I dont think te kind of hot glue I've used will settle into a perfectly centered mass. It dries too fast.
That spiral is drawn on (set) hot-melt glue. The "normal" white sticks of it work just fine. Just make sure you give the gun plenty of time to heat up to ensure the glue's fully fluid.

Hi,
Looking to make a few more changes to my CD67 around 7372 chip.
C115 > 119. Ray's list suggests upping them from 47n cer. to 100n pps.
I've got some 220n Wima MKS around, will upping these caps to that level cause any issues?
I'll also change C125 to a polystyrene.

Pete

I remember doing that spiral on your puck, made it sound much better 😀
Black hot glue is the best as it is less brittle & like Simon said leave the hot glue gun on ages so the glue gets very hot and runs into the area nicely. Don't turn on the cd player for at least 15 mins because if you do some of the still hot glue blobs out when it reads the disc thans to the centrifugal force ruining your work.
Simon now has the newer Workmate hifi rack 😉

Ok Simon says! and Brent too. Which leaves the question about trimming the surplus so that the ideal ballance is achieved when it's spinning. Once the hot glue is in there, it ain't coming out easily.
Simonty Hi
My Arcam Alpha 5 disc does not spin centrally either - does your Marantz
spin true ?

Hi,
The Marantz did as far as I can remember. My Arcam seems ok, maybe less than perfect. I don't know the significance of it though.

OK
It seems logical to try - damping and mass loading etc.
If it's already all over the place and plays discs fine then
what's to go wrong- I guess ?
Did it sound better in some way on your Marantz ?
Thanks for the reply

And
IMO, it should not add anithing benefic if the center puck does not spin centered. That is why I removed my coin.
I don't remember adding glue making it sound better but that was back in the days when Brent was helping me to repair damage I'd done to my player so it probably received several changes at once. I just think it's one of those belt and braces mods one might as well do "just to be sure". I often find that enough little tweeks we're unsure of really add up to make great music.
I wonder, though, if its effect may be a little bit like those cork mats and other products designed to damp the disc being played. I guess it will be far less effective, however.
Simon Hi
Looking through this properly you were all five years younger when this thread started !!
What have you learned in this time I wonder ?
The Arcam A5 ' two box ' is pretty interesting too.
Is this now a better machine considering the work you did on the Marantz ?
Is there a different thread I can chase to see what you did for the two box
Arcam 5 ( it was a 5 wasn't it ? ).
Interested to know how you did this mod.
On reflection.......apologies for the stupid question re sonic improvements
gained from filling the spinning thing with hot gooooo !
Thanks
Andrew
