hi all, glad to have found this great site ! my intrests are mostly vintage audio from the golden age . haveing been born at the dawn of the golden age (1957) i can rember my dad digging thru tube boxes and cursing at that fisher...pushing that huge altec from one corner to another till he had it just right..........and i learned early the value of tubes , one day he caught me with the tube box out playing with tubes....needless to say ,i was in big trouble.
a few years later ,i was 10 or 11, rideing my schwinn stingray down an alley and spotted a dynaco st70,and a pas preamp on the floor of an open garage ,i rode around the block a couple times...hmm , no one around to ask,...they must be out for trash..right?......so i grabbed them and off i went......that was a juggling act on that bike ill never forget....the amp weighed almost as much as i did but i made it home......and i dont think my dad completly bought the story but he cooled off pretty quick(he obviously loved this stuff) and within a couple hours and a trip to thrifty's for a tube we had them apart and back together working!
well , many years has passed with it all a faint memory till about 5 years ago when i came across a scott 222c......brought it home,hooked it up,sat back and said,.... ahh yeah ,....i rember that sound!
since then ive been collecting , comparing , reading , repairing , restoreing and enjoying the hobby . (i like the word hobby better than addiction).
this looks like a great place to learn and exchange ideas. hope i can contribute some thought to the forum as well , although i have alot to learn and loaded with questions.

hi lgreen, thanks..............on the dynaco , i dident go into detail but it was on the ground dirty piled up with a bunch of other junk next to the trash cans....it was a safe bet it was awaiting trash pickup ......i just broke my dads rules , always ask , no matter what.
did your parents have any classic hifi equip. back in the day ?

Sorry, I was just kidding about that.
Not sure about my parents, my father was an engineer (EE) at Bell Labs and built his own >>Huge<< speakers. That was in probably 1972 or so. That's all I can remember. He was not into audio but liked woodworking. Made tables, chairs, cabinets, beds, engravings, etc.... Speakers like most everything else were made of solid Oak. He hated pine and the "lesser" woods. Not sure about the amps we used but they were definately lo fi. He was not an audio inspiration but certainly was a DIY inspiration. He built and wired mostly everything. He even hand built his own jig to dove-tail drawers.
I used his speakers on the driveway basketball court for games with me and my friends through the '90s and they were great.

There's a thread in the Lounge section about " what have we found today ?"(in the trash ,but not necessarily)...I'll have to update it,since 1 month ago I just found :1 pair perfect
shape Altec 300,woofers need refoaming,deep diving needed to get the second . Sitting aside ,in a box,with a tv sitting on top , a Sansui a5500 and a Marantz receiver.
But I left there 3 heavy pieces which were gone soon : 3 carpentry clamps !
