Funny tube tale from southamerica

Hello,
I live in Colombia, South America and my relation to tubes is limited to have a couple of pieces of gear in my system that have tubes. One is a Shanling CD player and the other a Dodd Pre-Amp.
Last monday I was searching for a 6922 or a 7308 for my CD because one of my tubes "died". Normally I buy the tubes in the USA, but this time I tried to find a local source here in Colombia.
To my surprise I found an ad in a web page mentioning to be selling "a box full of tubes". To make the story short, I bought the box risking to receive a pile of junk.
The seller was a lady and the box used to belong to her father who had a small Radio and TV repair shop in a small city near Bogota, our capital city.
I live in Cali, so I had the box shipped to my house, after paying, of course.
Once I received the box, I was impressed by the weight: about 40 lbs!!!😱
Full of rocks, I tought, I just bought some bricks and my friends are going to laugh at me for eons!!!🙁.
One of them, was with me when I opened the box. Honestly, I had to go the bar and fixed us a couple of shots of my best Single Malt Scotch and simply because I had no champagne available!!!. The box was filled to the top with beautifully preserved boxes of tubes and what was better: With tubes inside!!!.
That was yesterday and the emptiness of the Scotch bottle is only compared with the emptiness with my knowledge of what I have here.
So perhaps I'll be bothering you guys with stupid/silly questions about tube references, etc..
So far I tried some Ecc88s and some strange PCC189s 😕
Thanks for taking the time reading this and enjoy your weekend.
Santiago

What a great find! That will keep you busy for a while. There are many tube amp designs on this site that you can build for yourself.

Welcome to ebay and PayPal for the rest of your treasure.

You will inevitably have some real treasures in there that are quite valuable and also quite a few other tubes that people no longer have much use for. ebay is probably your best choice for selling the ones that you have no need for. The other option of course is to offer some of the tubes here in diyaudio.

Nice deal, many of the tubes will be TV types which are probably not much use, but there will be definitely some gems in there as well -- those alone will make it worth the price you paid 😉

Have fun
Kenneth

RIGHT ON, Kenneth, I already found some TV types and still in the process of finding the gems. Right now I'll be going upstairs to try a pair of Phillips. Crossing my fingers!! 🙂

Thats great! Good on you.
Too many stories are more like when I went to my engineering school's storage and asked the old guy who had worked there his whole life if they perhaps had some tubes I could buy so I could do some experimenting, he said 'well we had a whole room stuffed, but we had them thrown out just some months ago'. That was in the late '90s. Boxes of nice phillips and mullards just tossed away to be destroyed🙁
I did get some samples he had saved for unknown reasons, but still...

ouch!!! that is a sad tale of tube holocaust.🙁
I've been testing tubes today with a friend using a Dyna-Jet Tester and we've had a great time. In the meantime, I've been testing some tubes and I'm quite happy with some Haltron tubes in my pre right now.
Thanks
