No, I think like most competitions these days it is a "money spending" competition. He who spends the most is likely to win. At $25K for the amp, and who knows for the batteries and speakers, this game is not for the weak of wallet. I don't get it myself, but my parents didn't get most of what I did either.
We (hobbyists gathered here in tubey portion of this forum) have obviously missed the mark entirely; people in SS forum are on the right track (to big bucks) but people in class-D are even further 😀 I guess I should dump my control electronics business and focus on audio concrete and contrasonic door bolts instead 🙄 Hey, there's obviously market for $1000/meter teflon insluated silver cables

I'm the kind of person who thinks that ~1W into 86/dB/W/m is normal listening level for a small room and would be absolutely delighted to own some 95-98 dB/W/m bookshelf speakers that I could pair with something 10W-ish. If anyone knows of such a beast (speakers) , do speak up !

If you're willing to settle for 92dB/W/m, Focal has something for you...
I never heard of good bookshelf speaker with higher efficiency (and decent fidelity in sound reproduction).

When I said "bookshelf" I meant something of relatively low weight and moderate dimensions as I have very small room with not alot of space to fill; they needn't be bookshelf per se, but something under 10 kilograms per speaker would be nice 🙂
I'd go for 92 dB/W/m only if they were cheap. 3 dB more would easily pull far more $$$ out of my pocket 😀

807V go for around 400€/piece, can be found cheaper if you look in the right places 🙂

Klipsch RB-61 would do with 95 dB - a few ebay stores in Europe have new ones for under-MSRP prices. For comparison, I'm using F-2 (95.5 dB) floorstanders with a 10-wpc EL84 pp amp and seldom have to turn the volume past 12 o'clock in a 60 m2 room.
Decware has the DM944s...94dB/W/m, ribbons.
It only appears at World Finals usually (for obvious reasons), but my favorite version of this is the "Deathmatch" - instead of a two or three second burp, recording a five-minute SPL average...drivers will pop, alternators will quit, it's not a question about if equipment will release the magic smoke, but how much of it 😀

Wow, I've just Googled around and realized that these can be had for ~400 EUR for a pair. I don't think I can get a better efficiency/price ratio that that from other manufacturers ? I've also took some time to browse through their website as I never paid attention to their products before, their B-3 model (93.5 dB/W/m) looks interesting as well: it is less efficient but it is also significantly cheaper (240 EUR + 30 S&H) ... choices, choices 😀
Interestingly, the lowest prices I've been able to find were from stores that advertise on eBay.

RB-61 is 'reference' series and supposedly better than 'consumer' B-3. It also goes some 10Hz deeper so that may be worth extra (RB-51 is comparable to B-3 in Freq range and sensitivity).
I am very happy with F-2 (which is essentially a floorstanding B-3) and prefer it over more expensive RF-52 (tried the same amp with those).

I figured you might be interested in the follow-up: the speakers (RB-61) arrived today, I plugged in my trioded SE PCL82 and a single speaker is loud enough at 80% volume setting on the source used. That's got to be ~1W RMS. Any louder and the neighbours would mostlikely complain, not to mention I'm not very comfortable with loud music either 🙂 Thanks for the great tip, I got a good price on them, now I only have to figure out how to connect them for 8R (this amplifier has 4R tap but not all my OPTs do) 😀
By the way, a curious thing has happened to me while testing the speakers: I was given a noname MP3 player with plenty of room so I decided to use it instead of my old player which I used before. While playing the noname player would apparently shutdown in the middle of the song and restart from the start every now and then. I figured it must be defective even though it worked allright before so I tried it out again with low-Z headphones. Damn thing would play normally into low-Z load but would cease and restart intermittently into 1M input Z of the amplifier, leading me to believe the integrated amplifier inside has some sort of "open" detection that perhaps conserves battery power ... or something 😕 My old player works just fine regardless of the load. Has anyone seen such a weird behavior with el-cheapo integrated headphone amplifiers yet ?
hey-Hey!!!,
If y'all want to put speakers on wall power, either rig a bunch in series( say 4x EVM Pro-Line ), or use a variac and volt meter so as not to melt them. Rest assured that 100-200W of wall current at 60 cps is *QUITE* loud...🙂 Had to run that experiment once when some neighbors decided to make enough noise to keep me awake one Saturday evening...heh-heh-heh.
cheers,
Douglas

Decware has the DM944 bookshelf speakers that are 94db and flat to 55hz.
Arnulf, glad you like your new RB-61. They will also get a bit 'warmer' after a couple of weeks and as far as the power goes you'll be fine even with ECL82 in triode (that puts out 1.4 W?)
I only recently measured my output voltages and it turns out my usual volume setting is at 1.2 VRMS, which translates to some 0.18W into 8-Ohm load!!(this was done with 40Hz and 1Khz tones, not the same as real music, but still plenty of headroom left)
