Hey guys- I built Pete Millet's Hybrid headphone amp about 2 years ago, and i must say it's a great design and sounds great through headphones. It has been stated that it can also be used as a preamp, as well (although I don't know of anybody that does this). I have just finished building a pass F5 amp last week to power my thor's and using the millet max as a preamp (through the headphone out to RCA).
I guess since this is my first seperates system (had some receivers before) What sort of things should I listen to, to know if this will be suitable as a preamp? Don't get me wrong-it sounds great, but before I modify the millet max case, I want to make sure that this is a proper way to go.
It would be perfect to have a headphone amp that can be used as a preamp as well (to cut down on boxes + easier integration), but if that isn't the case my next project may be an aikido.
Thanks and sorry for the long post,
Kevin

-it sounds great
Well, that's about it! If it sounds great then use it as it is.
Then, when you have a functioning music system, you can decide if you want to spend time and money trying to better it. I mean by building an altrnative, so you can then swap the new one in / out without having to rip apart your existing one, hence always having music available to you and having a known reference against which to judge 'improvements'.
If you find that you can only use a small part of the volume control you might want to build a second one without the gain tube, just a volume control and output ('diamond') buffer.
Perhaps others will be able to offer alternative ideas...
