Having said that I wonder if anybody compared Multicellular 805 to sectoral 511 horns. 288c on 805 and 802-D on 511, crossover would be 800-1k first order crossed to 15" in a box

This seems a sort of strange question, but I suppose I've come close to comparing what you mean. The multi-cell horns are in another class. Much more open and "lighter" sounding than the sectoral horns. That's been my experience and also that of friends who have compared the two.

I would not use a 1st order crossover in the 800-1000Hz range. Better 2nd order. It just integrates better with the woofer. Both these horn/driver combos are going to roll off quasi 4th order a near 400Hz. Distortion rises very fast down there, so you want to keep out of it. For me, a nice crossover point on the 511-802 is 850Hz, 2nd order. You can take the 288 lower.

Thank You.
I found 805 locally which I'll be able to borrow by the end of the week. Somehow I remembered Edgar post in which he said that integration with DR woofer to horn is best with 12dB on woofer and 6 dB on Horn.I will try 850Hz 2nd order. Nominal altec N501-8A crossover with EQ circuit doesn't sound right with biflex and I suspect neither with other woofers.
The objectives here are not stereo listenning but even sound distribution with "horn twist;) across the whole listenning space. My friend said to forget the horn ,cross ribbon to a biflex and be done with it.

I've got 805B horns and those are really pretty. They do sound a lot "lighter"and more open even without messing up with crossover (except L-pad) which is 800 hz 12dB on woofer and 6dB on tweeter with 90354 altec EQ . I will try Hiraga EQ tomorrow.Boom (60hz) on bass is an issue but midrange is nice.Yeah, it was worth to try those horns. I'm "scheming" to buy and hoard them but $$$:(. I wonder which woofer would do in 5 cu.ft, maybe 414-16B?

I have 511 with 802d and with altec EQ circuit they are more or less acceptable in my space but I wonder if 805 horn (288c driver)would work better in this particular sytuation where pin-point imaging is not a goal but wide distribution of sound is desirable.

The 511 is a mini-805 in approximation, so the main difference is the 805's 'fuller' bottom end due to its larger driver/throat, mouth area and further 'throw' due to its greater axial length. The former limits its HF response and the latter works against it for typical HIFI/HT apps since its greater size means it has greater directivity over a wider BW than the 511, so actually has a slightly 'tighter' pattern.

Even the 511 is too long for most typical listening distances if mated to a point source since they will decay over short distances at different rates, though staggered XO points helps somewhat. From this we see that WRT coverage angle the 811 is the better choice in typical HIFI/HT apps and pure waveguides designed for the app is best.

FWIW, I found that stacked 511s with the upper driver rolled off yields a better '805' overall plus has more vertical directivity down low.

If you need a wider sound-stage than an 811 yields, then a > 90 deg horn such as a 1005 or even 1505 is required if you want Altec, but their HF response requires a super tweeter horn for best performance over typical HIFI/HT listening distances.

Thanks GM!
So far I put together only one channel and I sit ~16 feet from speaker . Space is narrow. That would change at my GF room where I could listen from over 20 ft to one speaker or another . Damn staircase in the middle of the room! or I could stand 10' at a front of a speakers spaced 20' appart ;(. I'd think 515, or 416 would hardly produce any bass in 5 cu.ft and a sub with already substantial boxes would be "difficult to negotiate". A friend has a pair of 15" 411-8A but those are only 92dB and sound a little dull to me. I do have a 550hz waveguide (well sorta -it's shallow Le Cleach tractrix) for 1.4" with adapter to 1" (I don't know how come I've got so many horns??) and that's what I'll try next. Last resort would be a pair of Audio NOte E/L's in neighbourhood.
