Well... you still need to have a receiver/DAC with 4 SPDIF inputs that can be used simultaneous.
The closest thing of that is the DenonLinkIII that has 3 channels (same protocol like SPDIF, has an extra channel for encryption/revers channel communication/sync with DAC).
On eBay and somewhere else there is already a converter that takes LPCM from HDMI and makes 8 analog channles. For 128USD.

I didn't know such exists, never liked to add a bulky AVR when all I want is to extract the sound and feed it to mostly existing components. Digital output would be nice, but can probably be retrofitted. The cheap box lacks speaker management, delays and bass assignment.
Once I got the keyword, Google found me another interesting box which does so. Unfortunately in "announced" state since > 1 year.
Does anybody know of other HDMI audio decoders? My ideal one would have XLR outputs and doubly serve as a good DAC for the front channels. Multiple HDMI welcome...

At one point I have inquired about the DAC's they have and it was some CS cip, but I didn't save the name.
So I guess one can tap into the i2s lines of the DAC's and do whatever...

Sure. Looking at their signal path diagram, it seems that the HD stuff like the Dolby TrueHD is only pass thru. And the encoded streams like DTS, AC-3 go only to the optical out. That might be a severe limitation.
But if you can get your source to send LPCM to the box, you might have a nice HDMI DAC. Either pick up the digital stream (I2S or other) and use your own DAC chips, or simply use the Crystal DAC chips and do better power supplies, output stages, etc.
Might be nice with a DVD/SACD like the Oppo or Yamaha, or for more control a Xonar sound card with HDMI out. Multi-channel or PC based active crossover.

these are interesting devices, the reason that I am asking is that many people here make their own DACs and they may want a format that they can use.

Just be aware any such device won't be HDCP complaint, unless they're adding the features after HDCP certification.

But it has 8 channel analogue out as far as i can see from the pictures, so it must be decoding something, no?

Only multichannel LPCM. If that's "decoding", then yes 🙂

Right. And there are a number of players that will do that. Maybe soundcards, too.
It could be a fun mod project, if you have the right source. But them we get into the problem of HDMI being a high jitter connection. Or so they say....
